Transition into Long-Term Care
The decision to confine a loved one in a long-term care facility is difficult for most
families since on the one hand, the older adult would be safe and well taken care of at a facility
but on the other hand, having them permanently committed to a facility of long-term care could
have negative effects on their mental health. Such is the dilemma John’s family is bound to face.
As the person tasked with helping the family to open up to the possibility of considering a
nursing facility as the best place for their John’s father, there are some factors I need to consider
when discussing the possibility with both John and Alice and with his father as well. This essay
discusses some of these factors and explores some of the challenges John and Alice might face if
they decide against transferring their elderly father to a nursing facility and instead opt to retain
the responsibility for his care.
Factors to Consider When Discussing the Transition with the Family
According to The Gerontologist, over 54% of individuals living with cognitive
impairment such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease have had to stay at nursing homes at least
once in a year (Hirschman & Hodgson, 2017). Given that John’s father has Alzheimer’s disease,
therefore, his transition to a nursing facility or other institution offering long-term care is
inevitable. With this information in mind, the first important factor to consider is that the
transition is arguably the only way to ensure that John’s father gets the best care and attention
that he requires given his physical and mental state. That he wandered away further proves this
point since his safety and security are threatened in addition to his physical and mental health.
