HIV/AIDS Analysis

What is the Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)?
According to ODPHP (2018), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that
necessitates the cause of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The virus
weakens the immune system of a person, reducing their ability in fighting infections.
Current data and statistics related to the disease
In the United States, HIV infections have continued to create health crises. There are
around 1.18 million Americans infected with HIV. Moreover, one person out of 8 has HIV and
has no idea why s/he has the disease (Skarbinski, Rosenberg, Paz-Bailey et al 2015). Despite the
fact that recent data has revealed that HIV infections have reduced by 18 percent in the United
States and from the year 2008 to 2014, the disease is continuing to spread (Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, 2018). In 2015, 81 percent of early diagnosis of HIV was diagnosed in
men. Over half of the diagnosis took place in bisexual and gay men, regardless of ethnicity or
race and 45 percent of yearly HIV diagnosis was carried out in African Americans; 28 percent
occurred in whites and 23 percent took place in Latinos/Hispanics.
By June 2017, 20.9 million individual living with HIV virus were found to be accessing
ART (antiretroviral therapy) across the world (World Health Organization (2018). This went up
from 15.8 million 2015, 7.5milion in the year 2010 and in 2000, we had less than one million. In
2016, 1 million individuals perished from the HIV related diseases, which brought the total of
people who died from related illness of AIDS to 35.0 million since the start of the epidemic.

The jails, community correction settings, and prisons are venues with the population that
are a higher HIV risk. It is critical to carry out systematic testing which is critical in identifying
HIV positive inmates. The early diagnosis may reduce HIV level in the communities where
inmates are returning. In 100 Americans, one is incarnated. In 3 black men, is incarcerated and 1
in 6 Latinos spend more time in jail compared to 1 of 17 white males. In the year 2015, the HIV
infections among the inmates in federal and state prison was found to be 5 times more compared
to the rate of infection among the those who are yet to be incarcerated and worse still, programs
of HIV testing are never implanted systematically in the setting (Skarbinski, Rosenberg, PazBailey et al 2015). Studies reveal that even in situations of fewer or equal circumstances, blacks
remain at risk. Among men that commit sex with other men, black men are susceptible for
getting HIV
Prevention strategies including complementary and alternative health therapies
As the number of HIV victim increase and many people is becoming aware of their status
of HIV, strategies of prevention, which are specifically targeted towards the individuals infected
have become critical (Skarbinski, Rosenberg, Paz-Bailey et al 2015). Prevention means that
people living with HIV has access to provision of prevention services, increased the availability
of ongoing interventions of HIV prevention, staying and linking to the Medicare care of HIV,
starting HIV treatment and getting the virus suppression (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 2016). It is always critical to enhancing comprehensive services available for
individuals suffering from HIV and their partners by collaborating with social service providers,
health departments, and community-based organization.

In America, public perception regarding HIV effects has reduced in the recent past.
Evidence exists to show that the risky behaviors can increase among the uninfected individuals,
mostly bisexual and gay men. PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a way of preventing to be
infected with the virus by simply taking a pill (Center for disease control and prevention, 2018).
If consistently taken, PrEP has proved to be reducing HIV acquisition among individuals who
are at significant risks by more than 92 percent. There are ongoing media campaigns which
emphasize HIV testing and prevention intervention of HIV for unaffected individuals who
always engross in the behaviors that might expose them to the disease. Attempts of diagnosing
the individuals infected with HIV, getting them suppressed virally and providing support and
prevention measures are essential.
