1. After reading “Live Each Moment for What It’s Worth,” write a paper in response to one of the following suggestions:

A. Explain whether you do or do not live by the “seize the moment” philosophy. As you give examples to illustrate the type of person you are, be sure to make clear what you think about your approach to life.

B. What do you think about Bombeck’s idea that we should “seize the moment” more often? Give examples from your own life or from the lives of friends, relatives, and acquaintances to illustrate and explain your reaction. c. Discuss this article with your classmates or with people you know outside of class. Have any of them “seized the moment” in ways that you particularly admire? Describe one or more of those people, making it clear how they have lived by Bombeck’s philosophy.

The story

you are? What prevents you from going to those places, doing those things, or seeing those people? I have a friend who lives by a three-word philosophy,“Seize the 1 moment.” Just possibly, she might be the wisest woman on this planet.Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven’t thought about it, don’t have it on their schedule, didn’t know it was coming, or are too rigid to depart from the routine. I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic 2 who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to “cut back.” From then on, I’ve tried to be a little more flexible. How many women out there will eat at home because their 3 husband suggested they go out to dinner AFTER something had been thawed? Does the word refrigerator have no meaning for you? How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat there in 4 silence while you watched Jeopardy? I cannot count the times I called my sister and said,“How 5 about going to lunch in half an hour?” She would gasp and stam- mer, “I can’t.” Check one: “I have clothes on the line.” “My hair is dirty.”“I wish I had known yesterday.”“I had a late breakfast.”“It looks like rain.” And my personal favorite, “It’s Monday.” She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch. Because Americans cram so much into our lives, we tend to 6 schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect. We’ll go back and visit the grandparents ... when we get Stevie toilet- trained. We’ll entertain ... when we replace the carpet in the liv- ing room. We’ll go on a second honeymoon ... when we get two more kids out of college.

Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get 7 shorter and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning we awaken and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of “I’m going to,” “I plan on,” and “Someday when things are settled down a bit.” When anyone calls my “seize the moment” friend, she is open 8 to adventure, available for trips and keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You can talk to her for five minutes and you’re ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of roller blades and skip an elevator for a bungi cord. My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice 9 cream. It’s just that I might as well apply it directly to my hips with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process.

The other day I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. 10 If my car hit an iceberg on the way home, I’d have died happy

SEIZE THE MOMENT

Introduction
Erma Bombeck’s idea of seizing the moment more often means enjoying life to the
fullest at every given moment. This would mean avoiding the excuses that prevent one from
having a life of happiness and joy. My own interpretation to the idea of seizing the moment is
about always taking advantage of every opportunity that occurs in life without any form of
postponing or excuses that can occur in life. Sometimes people always ignore the chances that
occur to their lives and the destiny that takes place in an individual’s eyes. It is always advisable
to always ensure that one has taken the surprises that occur in life and made decisions that
improve their level of happiness and accomplishment. In other words, seizing the moment is all
about enjoying the surprises as they occur in life. My brother lives every day of his life as an
adventurous individual who takes risks, parties a lot, goes to vacations and also travels around
the world any given time.
Taking the Surprises
The idea of seizing the moment can be best explained by the life history of my brother.
He always takes life as an adventure to try out new things, new friendships and also enjoys
travelling a lot. This not only gives him comfort but also improves his lifestyle a lot. One of the
best ways to take up surprises is to always live a life full of purpose. This can be done by
constantly changing careers when they are not satisfactory and also changing workplaces that do
not provide an opportunity for growth. My brother is an action oriented individual who always
acts especially when faced with real life challenges. He does not blame anyone for his failures
but always end up acting on every opportunity that arises. His focus is always to fulfill his
dreams of being a successful individual in the society.

Making excuses
Excuses prevent people from seizing opportunities that come in life. My bother has
changed so many careers in life that he does not remember the job he started working. This is
because he always wanted to be someone who inspires other individuals in this life. However, he
has failed to attain that goal as a result of chasing a career that is not satisfactory to him. He does
not like making excuses but always takes responsibility of his own actions which helps him in
his duties. My brother is also an example of an individual who does not compare himself with
other people. He believes that success in life can always be achieved when an individual has
taken responsibility of their own actions. When failure knocks to his door, he always takes time
to think of how to turn his challenges into opportunities. This has made him happy and
successful over time. When people take time to complain, they always waste their energies and
also fail to seize the moment.
Conclusion
To sum it up, Bombeck provided a philosophy of life in which a person can live without
any consequences of their actions. The idea of seizing every moment and enjoying life as an
adventure with no consequences to worry about. My own interpretation to the idea of seizing the
moment is about always taking advantage of every opportunity that occurs in life without any
form of postponing or excuses that can occur in life. My real brother is an example of an
individual who lives by this philosophy. He enjoys every time and spends him money travelling
and enjoying new experiences as they come in life. This makes my brother to live a life of
happiness and also have opportunities that make him happy at all the time. For one to seize the
moment, they need to take risks that are calculated to always avoid the regrets that come up in
