Description

Read the attached case study and answer the following questions.

1) Describe the methods that this region uses to fund their plans and land acquisitions, and draw comparisons to where it is different/similar, stronger/weaker than the Twin Cities case study.

2) The plan to protect the wetlands in this region is biologically comprehensive, not limiting management to one species or particular habitat type. Thinking back to "How Wolves Change Rivers", why is this the better way to go?

3) This regional plan allows jurisdictions flexibility in identifying their specific preservation needs, describe the ways this "teamwork" approach has achieved better data and success, and where it might be weaker.

4) Describe the use of resource zones and overlay zoning, how they're used to protect certain areas and where they might be absent and thus can't protect other areas. Also describe the efforts being made to build in a Green Infrastructure style.

5) Describe their use of a mitigation bank method for Wetland restoration, and why it's a win-win for the region

6) What are the positive social implications of this planning initiative?

7) What did you find most interesting about this case study? Did you see room for improvement that is not already addressed?

and initiatives that allow for this. To achieve this Eugene has had to fund their nature-friendly
program plans and acquisitions of lands by first setting up two departments that ensure habitat
protection which is the Public Works Department and the Planning and Development
Department. The west Eugene wetlands program is one such program that since its inception has
acquired around 3000 acres of sensitive lands both outside and inside of the wetlands plan area.
The program also led to the establishment of the effective wetlands mitigation bank program and
the restoration of around 700 acres of land. Eugene is able to fund the programs through
lobbying for federal funds to support capital projects, land protection, and airport-related issues
where the community prior to sending a lobbyist, meets to decide and agree on top priori...
