Introduction
Democracy is a term that is widely known and used by many people. Democracy has
many definitions which all bring one particular point home. Democracy is a word formed by the
Greek which can be defined as a system of the government where every individual exercises
power through his/her voting rights. The citizens build their governing body, elect their
representatives and they raise opinions on every issue. In a democracy, the rule of the majority
takes the lead in coming up with the decisions, but the government ensures that the minority is
protected and listened to at all times. Democracy allows conflict resolution, and no particular
single force control is in charge. It will enable every individual's voice to be heard and
considered. Larry Diamond, an American political scientist claims democracy is made up of;
active participation of people, a fair and free election that allows choosing and replacing the
government and human rights protection. This paper focuses on the democracy of America, its
history and how it has changed over the years.

Alexis de Tocqueville was the first man to study the revolution of the American
democracy. He studied the changing revolution that occurred the previous hundred years since
1840. In his first book, he stated that the social and economic conditions in America had become
equal. He also noted that the Puritans made a remarkable contribution to the d emocracy of the
US since they established the principle of sovereignty which was followed by a constitutional
