Writing Prompts: Choose ONE of the prompts below: 1. With education providing an avenue for social change and/or mobility, what should that social change lead to? Is the goal of being educated more influenced by the potential of wealth and power, or should the goal of education be focused on increasing equality and character? Dr. Martin Luther King argues the latter in his paper, "The Purpose of Education." Do you agree with him? Why, or why not? 2. Many of you are considering transferring to university upon completing your goals at Cuyamaca. Is college a wise investment? Or does it create too much debt to make it worthwhile? Liz Weston in her article, "Why College Is Still Worth It Even though It Costs Too Much" from Money magazine, makes a case for why it is a good investment. How about you? What is your view on this issue? 3. It may be shocking to learn how vast the differences in schools are - not so much in resources as in teaching methods and philosophies of education. Jean Anyon observed five elementary schools over the course of a full school year and concluded that fifth-graders of different economic backgrounds are already being prepared to occupy particular rungs on the social ladder. Mike Rose in his article "I Just Want to Be Average," from his book Lives on the Boundary also exposes the injustices underprivileged students face. Is it just underprivileged students that face a weak educational system? Who is to blame for the failing system? What is your take on this issue? Directions: Write an essay in which you do each of the following: Introduce your essay by establishing what prompt you are responding to. Briefly summarize the issue (what people are debating; what the opposing views are). Now that you have had a chance to read and learn more about the issue, state your opinion in third person (your thesis). Include the points you will use in the body to support your thesis.

THE TYPES AND PURPOSE OF EDUCATION
Introduction
According to Jean Anyon, a chairperson at Rutger university states that, “It is no surprise
that schools in wealthy communities are better than those in poor communities, or that they
better prepare their students for desirable jobs,” (Anyon, 1980). The education system in the
country is aimed at providing and ensuring there is a balance between people in all social classes.
Education is crucial in providing equality as learners are able to gain the information that is
aimed at elevating their lives to be better. When a child is taken to a school, the main goal should
be to learn and build a path for a successful career. When schools are set up on the basis of social
divides, then the purpose of an education system loses its purpose and meaning all together. This
paper seeks to tackle the importance of education, the issues of social class in the education
system and the steps the government should take to close the social gap. Additionally, a
comparison of different schools will be conducted and student’s capabilities and learning
analysed in relation to the type of school they attend.
Education is paramount and key to achieving success in life. First and foremost it’s
important to acknowledge the importance of education in the current society. Education serves
different purposes in the life of an individual. One of the goals of education is to produce an
