Running head: FAMILY 1 Family Paper Tamiko Ross Group Systems October 9, 2018 FAMILY 2 Abstract After understanding the book My Bloody Life and other study materials, I was capable to have a better comprehending of what a single person faces when it comes to being tangled within a family. There are certain family based issues that can take a toll on an individual and lead one to become involved in a gang. Indeed, there are also certain community-based issues that should be in place, but these are often not there to use to one’s advantage. To investigate, I conducted a community-based assessment based on Spergel’s Model and other assessment techniques. FAMILY 3 My family Everyone has family, sometimes big and sometimes small, but it’s all the same for us. In the family, we have father, mother, us and sometimes with siblings. Or, if we have a big family, we will also have our grandfather and grandmother lived with us together. Whatever the family size like big or small, we have a family, we all have a place we can feel relaxed and we have a place where in the care of our heart. But today, I just want to talk about “my small family”. My father is 54 years old now, but he still looks very strong, I always will say he looks like a bear, not because he looks tall, because he is a little bit fat, but I don’t want him continue gain weight. It’s not because I think he looks bad or something else, just because we have the genetic disease-- hypertension in our family. The doctor says if he gains too much weight it will be bad for his body and his heath. So, I have been working all the summer vacation just to give him a gift—the card of gym. He doesn’t like to do sports, and he always say that also heredity to me, because for me, doing sports also will kill me. But for his heath, I couldn’t let him just do it, so I send him to do sports and I also did it with him together two mouths. Now he has not a really fat body, and looks healthier than before. When I talk about my mother, I need to use my imagination to guess and imagine her because she was not with me all the time, she doesn’t stay with me, and grow up with me together. The reason is that my hometown is very small town; it is difficult for people to find a good job there. That’s why most of the people who live in my hometown left there and went to Korea to work. And that’s why we have a lot of family like mine which belongs to a single parent family. My mother has been working in Korea since I was 6 years old. Before she left China to go back to Korea to work, she worked in China as a Korean guide. She can speak Chinese as well as Korean. FAMILY 4 Until now, we don’t have a lot of chances to see each other, but I believe that when I will finish my master here, I can find a good job and I will stay with her all the time together. The last member in my family, of course it’s me. Well, I am not a so smart student like my father who can solve a lot of math quiz, actually I am really bad at math and English, my father always said why I didn’t work hard for these two subjects, and I could go to a good college in China, but I need to say that I really hated math and English before. But still, I came to America to study English, maybe just because I inherited the spirit from my father “To never give up”. And unfortunately, I didn’t inherit the beautiful face from my mother, even if I don’t want to admit that, but all my family members told me that is true. So what? I still like to put make up on, have my own style, smile to everyone and face life with good attitude, my mother said this is the most similarity with her, so I think it’s enough. This is my family, just like all the normal family in the world, and also different from all the different families in the world. Everyone’s family has its particularity, and commonality. I love my family, just like they love me. I will never stop keep watching my father’s weight, and always hard working to provide a good life to my mother. This is all I believe in. This is a description of the family based on the material that was read. It is hard to determine the ages of his sisters since they are not provided. The structure of the family reflects the size and shape of the family. The family system is comprised of the individuals above. Each family member behaved the way that he or she did because of the way that he or she was raised. Reymundo’s stepfather’s abused him repeatedly, and the family thought that this was normal behavior. This shows that “the more oppressed and helpless they feel, the greater the risk is of their engaging. His sisters just tried to live and hoped that they would not be beaten as he was. FAMILY 5 They did not harm their own child or his sisters in any way. Reymundo’s mother physically abused him, and she did not stop the abuse of his stepfathers toward him; she added to his pain. She promoted the abuse instead of being a good mother and stopping it and comforting her son. His sisters did not do anything to stop the abuse because they did not want to get hit. The family system was dysfunctional because of the parent’s behavior and verbal abuse toward Reymundo. Pedro would constantly scream and be physically abusive toward Reymundo. He tried to function within this environment by continuing to go to school and when he was abused, he crawled under his bed and cried in order to deal with the beatings that occurred on a daily basis. Indeed, there was a highly dysfunctional family system, which included dysfunctional, surrounding mezzo and macro systems in place for Reymundo. The macro system that should have been there for Reymundo was not very well established so that he could utilize them for his benefit. “The environment may range from the family system to global community in the social realm and from housing to the wider natural environment – air, soil, and water – the physical realm” . One mezzo system that Reymundo and his friends Julio, Jorge, Noel would go to was a “candy store that was on the corner of Rockwell and Potomac Streets called Gloria’s”. Another system that they would go to was Carmen’s. It was a place where they could go to spend time, and this would keep them off of the streets and provide a place to keep them out of the cold. Another system was Von Humboldt School and Tuley High School which Reymundo attended on a daily basis. He always looked forward to going to school, just so that he could get away from Pedro; “it was an escape from my home life” so that he would not get a beating and then get to be with his friends and learn new things. Pedro thought that “Clemente High School was nothing more than a hunting ground and its students were his prey. This is a explanation of the family based on the material that was read. It is hard to determine the ages of his sisters since they are FAMILY 6 not provided. The structure of the family reflects the size and shape of the family. The family system is comprised of the individuals above. Each family member behaved the way that he or she did because of the way that he or she was raised. The police in Chicago were not helpful in relation to Reymundo and his friends. The police saw them as “Ricans” with attitudes and treated them with disrespect. The more troubled and stranded they feel, the greater the risk is of their engaging in alcoholism, addiction, and violence in the home would propose that there be extra education services, job development opportunities, training for those jobs, and services that will support youth gang members. There are some “useful interventions might include referring juveniles prone to gangs to youth service agencies, counseling such youth in collaboration with school guidance programs. There were family-based values that Reymundo’s family was not providing him with in order to function properly on a daily basis. Some family-based values are acceptance, love, and emotional security. The Latin Kings helped to fulfill these values because “they embraced each other’s acts of violence. That’s why they go to jail for one another. That’s why gang members kill and die together. That bond relieves the pain of what is the truth. Reymundo wanted to be accepted and looked up to by The Latin Kings, and he got the acceptance from them because “the only way he knew of achieving that status among the gang members was to commit as many violent acts as possible. That’s how it worked. Do unto others, and then do unto someone else. Finally, those around [Reymundo] stopped thinking of him as a coward”. He was given everything he needed from the Kings, instead of receiving these from his family. They entrusted him with their lives and cared for him in every way possible. They went above and beyond to extreme measures to make sure that he had everything he needed to live a fuller and richer life. FAMILY 7 Community Based Issues There were family-based issues that made Reymundo the way that he was, yet there were community based issues that contributed to the way he behaved. A community deals with a great deal of cultural diversity. Some contributing factors include institutional racism from the police that occur in the streets toward youths that are in gangs. That bond relieves the pain of what is the. Reymundo wanted to be accepted and looked up to by The Latin Kings, and he got the acceptance from them because “the only way he knew of achieving that status among the gang members was to commit as many violent acts as possible. That’s how it worked. Do unto others, and then do unto someone else. Because of this, Reymundo felt unstable, making him feel insecure, and he had a fear of not knowing what was ahead in his future, a future which excluded him from part of the equation that would get him the help that he needed. The availability of criminal opportunities was there all the time and at any time a gang member said or did something toward different gang members in retaliation. The marginalization kept him at a lower standing within society and did not allow him to move forward. Social justice is part of the problem and part of the reason individuals who are within minority groups are marginalized and deprived of an education or of whatever they need to be socially included in a community, but they are denied, keeping marginalized individuals. After being detained after having a gun piercing to his head, Sanchez believed differently about the police. Sanchez states, “It was the first time that a cop had tried to talk some sense into me. They were the first cops I had any encounter with since Officer Friendly who even remotely acted like they cared .The neighborhood behaviors consisted of the shouting of curse words and implications of Reymundo being a punk. There were some cops who would flat out tell us that if we stopped gang-banging, they would come looking for us”. They would buy guns, sell to [the gang] for a profit, and then FAMILY 8 report them stolen. The retired cop provided us with a special radio that picked up the local police frequency”.” .The more oppressed and helpless they feel, the greater the risk is of their engaging in alcoholism, addiction, and violence in the home would propose that there be extra education services, job development opportunities, training for those jobs, and services that will support youth gang members. There are some “useful interventions might include referring juveniles prone to gangs to youth service agencies, counseling such youth in collaboration with school guidance programs, because of this, Reymundo felt unstable, making him feel insecure, and he had a fear of not knowing what was ahead in his future, a future which excluded him from part of the equation that would get him the help that he needed. The marginalization kept him at a lower standing within society and did not allow him to move forward. The police were not helpful and were racist. After a gun fight, Reymundo heard the police say that one of them “couldn’t wait to get his hands on some spics”. Based on the community model, I will be enhancing the quality of life and promoting well-being for those children and families who have overcome physical abuse or substance abuse in families like the Sanchez family. The more oppressed and helpless they feel, the greater the risk is of their engaging in alcoholism, addiction, and violence in the home would propose that there would be more guidance to help children and young adults on a one-on-one basis so that they would not want to get involved with a gang. Social justice is part of the problem and part of the reason individuals who are within minority groups are marginalized and deprived of an education or of whatever they need to be socially included in a community, but they are denied, keeping marginalized individuals. Another social justice factor keeping youths such as Reymundo marginalized is the fact that society undermines what they are capable of contributing to society and sees them as only being criminals and nothing else, which is wrong. It would be FAMILY 9 best if the community would take the time to make sure that society is aware of the growing youth gang problem and address the concerns and the long-term interests that come with this problem. Community Based Assessment: Spergel’s Model The community-based assessment based on Spergel’s model can be completed, based on Reymundo’s situation and what is best for him. The macro institutions that are impacting Reymundo’s life are “those with responsibility for addressing the problem representatives of criminal justice and community agencies, grassroots organizations. One time, after he had been arrested after having a gun pointed to his head, Sanchez thought differently about the police. Sanchez states, “It was the first time that a cop had tried to talk some sense into me. They were the first cops I had any encounter with since Officer Friendly who even remotely acted like they cared Consensus must be developed on the definition of the youth gang problem particularly by decision makers of key agencies, community organizations, and government units. These institutions did not help him effectively; the only one was, to some extent, his school. The other macro organizations that were exists in his existence were diverse in positions of how they assisted or did not help, according to what happened to him in his life. The fact is that once he got arrested, the Kings still helped him to get a lawyer and get out of jail. The schools that he attended were effective and beneficial to the point that they kept him from being at home and being physically abused by his stepfather and mother. The schools provided him with the education and guidance that was needed but that he did not get at home. Indeed, the best way to deal with the problem of gangs is to have a mobilized community. “Youth gang suppression and intervention efforts require a thorough understanding of the complexity of gang activity in the context of local community life”. I would also advise that “a full range of strategies prevention, intervention, and suppression must be planned. It is hard to determine the ages of his sisters since they are not FAMILY 10 provided. The structure of the family reflects the size and shape of the family. The family system is comprised of the individuals above. Each family member behaved the way that he or she did because of the way that he or she was raised. but they must be appropriately ordered and prioritized. The sidelining kept at a lower standing within society and did not allow him to move forward. Social justice is part of the problem and part of the reason individuals who are within minority groups are marginalized and deprived of an education or of whatever they need to be socially included in a community, but they are denied, keeping marginalized individuals. I will be increasing the quality of life and promoting well-being for those children and families who have overcome physical abuse or substance abuse in families like the Sanchez family. The more oppressed and helpless they feel, the greater the risk is of their engaging in alcoholism, addiction, and violence in the home would propose that there be extra education services, job development opportunities, training for those jobs, and services that will support youth gang members. There are some “useful interventions might include referring juveniles prone to gangs to youth service agencies, counseling such youth in collaboration with school guidance programs, and assisting community-based agencies in targeting youth gang members for job development”. Society donates to the relegation of his community by ongoing to keep those persons, such as Reymundo, relegated from society due to the growth of practices, strategies, and packages that should be in place to profit those who need the aid but do not obtain it. Because of this, Reymundo felt unstable, making him feel insecure, and he had a fear of not knowing what was ahead in his future, a future which excluded him from part of the equation that would get him the help that he needed The impact I can have as a social worker on the gang problem in Orlando is a great one. I would provide outreach services geared toward young teenagers so that they would not get involved with gangs and give them strategies that would focus completely on each individual based FAMILY 11 on his or her circumstances. I will be involved in the process of making referrals to link a family to the needed resources that are required to help and heal the family and guide the individual properly to better things in life instead of being part of a gang. As a social worker, I will be competent and intelligent and know how to use my abilities to the best to make good decisions based on the facts that are provided to me from a family interview. I will conduct assessments and use a combination of interventions based on the needs of each individual at hand. I will be enhancing the quality of life and promoting well-being for those children and families who have overcome physical abuse or substance abuse in families like the Sanchez family. This is a account of the family based on the quantifiable that was delivered. It is hard to determine the ages of his sisters since they are not provided. The structure of the family reflects the size and shape of the family. The family system is comprised of the individuals above. Each family member behaved the way that he or she did because of the way that he or she was raised. The more oppressed and helpless they feel, the greater the risk is of their engaging in alcoholism, addiction, and violence in the home. Having empathy and the understanding will make me a better social worker so that I can help someone to become a better individual rather than become part of a gang, social worker who takes the time and care to really make that difference in others’ lives. Abstract

In the understanding the book My Bloody Life and other study constituents, I became
capable in having a better comprehending of what a single person faces when it comes to being
tangled within a family. There are various certain family established matters which can take a
toll on a person and can even lead to one becoming involved in gangs. Certainly, there are also
definite community-associated matters which should be in place; however these are frequently
not present to consumption to one’s gain. On my investigation, I carried out a communityestablished evaluation,e initiated on the Spergel’s Model and added evaluation methods.
