Researches have proved that knowledge concerning treatment of different mental
health problems has tremendously advanced. These advancements achieved in this field of study
is attributed to several studies conducted in this recent years. Majority of these studies have their
focus on testing and developing different approaches in order to come up with the most ideal
treatment approach for a different mental health issues. (Akhavan, Gharaat, Geramian, Tehrani &
Farajzadegan, 2012). Researches based on these studies have developed a variety of theories that
are quite essential in treating psychiatric disorders. Incorporation of these theories in treatment is
more important given the fact that they tend to produce positive outcome.
Using theories to identify and treatment of mental illness plays an important role in
helping therapists understand the problem in the right context according to Bonfils et al, (2014).
For effective application of theory to manage treatment of a client depends on the ability of the
therapist of being satisfied that the client has provided enough information necessary for further
diagnosis. Due to inefficient information provided by the client, the use of DSM 5 Cross-Cutting
Symptom Measure- Level 2- Form would be necessary to apply. Parents or guardian could also
be assisted to complete Personality Inventory part of the DSM 5 Information Form (PID-5-IRF)
(American Psychological Association & American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The
counselor stands a chance of deciding the best treatment option for identified mental deficiency
once enough information have been generated (Walters et al, 2012). Again, the most ideal
treatment for a particular mental health illness could be identified by using mental illness
theories. The most suitable theory that could be incorporated into the treatment suit Eliza is
Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). Social Cognitive Theory places emphasis on explaining human

behavior giving a better understanding of the thought process of the individual (Zec, 2012). This
theory could be incorporated into the treatment of Eliza to identify her maladaptive thought
pattern. This theory could be used to identify the most ideal treatment for the client.
The idea of selecting SCT for Eliza’s treatment comes with a number of reasons. The
number one reason for this selection is to create the opportunity for the therapist to observe the
client (Eliza) in her social context. According to SCT an individual stands the chance of
developing better behavior in future if a person observes a behavior of a model in a social
environment and understands the consequences of that behavior. Hence the therapist could help
Eliza live a sober live. This is possible because the therapist will be able to gather all the
information that will be necessary to help guide the client’s subsequent behavior. The reason
behind this assertion is that new behaviors are learnt through replicating and imitating actions of
other rather than just solely through making the first attempt.
Social Cognitive Theory has some assumptions that could be helpful when seeking
treatment for Eliza. This said theory makes an assumption that thoughts are the key determinants
of an individual’s behavior and emotions (Dashtgard, Heydari & Moghadam, 2014). The
therapist will base on this assumption and focus on to identify Eliza’s thought and establish a
relationship between her thoughts, emotions, and behavior. The theory also stresses on the role
an environment plays in influencing individuals behavior. According to SCT, environment is
comprised of physical and social environment (Zec, 2012). From Eliza’s assessment the
environment that determines her behavior in this regard will be her friends and family.
Understanding this model will help the counselor get deeper understanding of the effects of other

environmental factors on the client’s mental health. The social cognitive theory has been proven
helpful in addressing a number of problems such as the ones exhibited by Eliza. This could be
used to address issues such as low self-esteem. Social cognitive theory stipulates that every
individual have the capacity to proactively engage their personal development by controlling
their thoughts, actions, and feelings (Zec, 2012). This means using this model for the treatment
of this client could be helpful in the sense that, the client will learn to confront her selfdisapproval comments and statements. To employ this model, the counselor could encourage
Eliza to take part in activities that would give her sense of self-worth. More importantly, this
model could help the clients change her thinking pattern hence, positive thinking pattern.
According to Heydari, Dashtgard & Moghadam (2014), individuals with low self-esteem
tend to overestimate the negative implications of their social interactions. Hence, this theory
could also be incorporated in treating clients with anxiety. Clients with low self-esteem normally
have issue with perception about other people. This theory stands a chance of changing their
thinking pattern by making clients understand that she has the capacity to do extraordinary
things. The legal issue that would be addressed through this model is alcoholism. The case was
presented by the university prohibit the use alcohol, and the client in question was found in that
act. Eliza stands the chance of facing the consequences of her own action. Social cognitive
theory could be used to teach Eliza the surviving skills without depending of alcohol.
