Both NASDAQ and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) are the two different and biggest
stock exchanges in the US. NYSE), was established in 1792 while NASDAQ was established in
1971. The two stock exchanges lists all types of stocks. However, NASDAQ initially provided
over-the-counter securities. The other similarity between the two exchanges is that all types of
stock can be listed on them provided they meet already set listing criteria (Harris, Hyde, &
Wood, 2014). One slight difference between them is that on average, technology companies are
largely listed on the NASDAQ.
In addition, NYSE remains the largest as well as the most powerful stock exchange
globally. Despite, NASDAQ enjoys listing more companies that NYSE even though NYSE has
greater market capitalization than NASDAQ, Tokyo, and London combined. One stock listed
and traded through NYSE is General Motors Company (GM) while one stock listed and traded
by NASDAQ is Apple (AAPL).
