Description

I need help on writing a in depth Research paper on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, 2nd edition (MMPI-2).

This paper should look at a psychological assessment instrument in depth. Assessment instrument is of student’s choosing but should be chosen off of the list provided by Dr. Moy on the announcement board. Students should utilize APA style; assistance withAPA style can be obtained at apa.org. Paper should be based on research using at least 6 scholarly sources (journalarticles, textbooks, and professional organization websites). Scholarly resources are available through the Nova Southeastern University library. It should address what the assessment measures, how it measures it, the validity/reliability,and what types of evaluations it is used in. Papers should be 8-10 pages in length

Introduction

The MPPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) and its subsequent versions
was published in 1943 (Butcher, 2011). Since then, the MMPI has been subjected to
widespread use and research across time and place. The MMPI-2 has 567 items that uses selfreporting to measure personality and psychopathology. The use of MMPI-2 is increasing
across place and time given the observation by Klock and Covington (2015), up to 90% of
California’s law enforcement agencies include the MMPI when they are carrying out
psychological screening. The versions of the MMPI include the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF
(Restructured Form). Whereas the two versions are currently available for use, this essay
focuses on critical assessment of the MPPI-2 in relation what it measures, how it measures it,
its validity and reliability, the types of evaluation it is used in.

What the assessment measures

As a psychological test, the MMPI seeks to assess personality traits and
psychopathology. The primary aim of using the MMPI is to ascertain the possibility of a
person suffering from mental health and other clinical issues. The MMPI-2 is designed in
such a way that it has 10 clinical scales and 4 validity scales (Framingham, 2018). Each scale
measures one of the major categories of abnormal human behaviour. Each validity scale
assesses the general test-taking attitude of a person. The validity scale also seeks to unravel
whether the subject answered the test items with the required degree of truthfulness and
accuracy.

What the MMPI-2 measures have been undergoing changes over time with additional
scales being included to fill the gaps over time. This is because researchers and practitioners
continue to recognise new areas that could be added to make the measurements required more

comprehensive. Finney (1961) noted that for about four years, the scores from the MMPI-2
continued to be blindly interpreted by the author and other psychologists. This might have
necessitated a closer consideration of the interpretation of the scores especially for clinical
services because any blind interpretation would lead to wrong diagnosis, hence, wrong
conclusions and recommendations. Making comparisons between the MMPI-2 scores and
interview reports provided a basis of accounting for discrepancies. Regardless of these
efforts, Finney (1961) identified that there were still many areas that were critical for clinical
interviews, but lacked a standard MMPI to measure. These were added later to fill the gaps as
the needs were identified. The 10 clinical scales of MMPI-2 are explained below.

1). Hypochondriasis (Hs)

This scale records a several vague and nonspecific complaints about the body
functioning of a person. The central focus of these complaints include abdomen and back
especially when negative medical tests persist (Framingham, 2018). The primary factors
measured by the Hs using its 32 items are poor health and gastrointestinal difficulties.

2). Depression (D)

The focus of the D scale is clinical depression. The major characteristics tested using
the 57 items of the D scale include poor morale, how a person is generally satisfied with life,
and lack of hope for the future (Framingham, 2018). Prevalence of depression is mostly
common among the disabled people. This is because of living dissatisfied lives caused
inability to take care of their own needs by themselves. Depressed people ...
