Discourse Community
Computer science, in general, is defined as the as the study of algorithms which includes
but not limited to their “formal and mathematical properties, their hardware realization, their
linguistic realization, and their applications.” Many people basically define computer science as
the basic application of pure mathematics into the wide field of computer systems. In general,
this is just the bridge between computer engineering and mathematics (McKinney, 8). Currently,
am doing computer science major and I did not enter into computer science as an outsider since
this has always been my dream. People switch careers and I have seen several switches from
engineering major or other fields to computer science but this is not the case with me. I have
always wanted to be part of this wonderful community because this is where I belong.
Computer science deeply interests me and I believe in its course and especially what
separates it from the rest of the academic fields. People choose careers because of different
reasons such as financial returns, influence from people in their lives, lack of better options, or
for passion (Lynch & Kidd, 5). The main reason why I chose computer science was that I wanted
to be part of something unique and that would make me feel special. I have plans and dreams
like any other learner and I believe there is no other field that would allow me to weigh my
potential better than computer science. The field of computer science in my view meets the
criterion of the discourse community in the following ways;
I.
The rite of passage is very simple and specific for those who dream of joining the larger
computer science discourse community; have a deep interest and a defiant passion in
computer science.

The community is very unique and interesting unlike other fields to work more in order
to achieve, this community strives to work less. It is not that they are not committed to
studies or do not give much time to their work but because their goals are very simple;
create a code that meets the required specification putting in mind efficiency as a major
factor to be...
