Instruction: 1. Notes Every unit has a set of notes. This is where you should begin. Open the notes and work through the document. It will direct you to other related resources periodically. These resources will be highlighted in red bold face type. When you see this type you should access the designated material. 2. Supplemental Material The supplemental materials include PowerPoint presentations and PDF documents drawn from a variety of sources. The PDF documents should be accessible by double clicking on the respective icon embedded in the notes. But this may not always work. Thus all PDF documents are included in the supplemental materials as well. If you cannot access something directly from the notes via a link to the PDF, access it directly in the supplemental materials. The PowerPoint presentations appear in the notes but are not embedded. Thus, you will have to access them directly by opening the appropriate file found in the supplemental materials. 3. Activity The final section of each unit contains the activity. In most cases you are expected to complete the activity at the end of the unit, but occasionally you are expected to complete it at the beginning of the unit or at some point during the unit. Thus you should access it when directed to do so in the notes. There are two types of activities. nd 2 Level Activities require you to do something that will involve researching a topic versus simply reacting to the course material. These activities are more like assignments and may take several days to complete. st Thus, they are weighted more heavily than 1 Level Activities. All activities need to be submitted through Safe Assignment. Assignments cannot be submitted within units. You must move to the Assign. Submission tab and open the link. Here you will find a place to deposit each assignment (13 activities and the final assignment). Be sure to submit each activity in the appropriate place by unit and name. Grading of activities is subjective, like grading of essays. To bring some uniformity to this process a Grading Rubric will be used that differentiates four possible scores: maximum, high, moderate, and low. You will find the st nd rubric used for grading both 1 and 2 Level Activities, which details the requirements for achieving each score and the associated points earned for doing so, in the Course Overview section under the Start Here tab. PAPERS Note: The format for papers can be either APA, MLA or another standard format. Citations can be in the text or noted in notes or in a bibliography. Double spaced is preferred. Assume that approximately 300 words equals one page. Conducting an Ice Breaker Activity The point of this activity is: • to provide you with a chance to conduct an ice breaker • to have you estimate the relative success of the activity • to have you consider how the activity might be improved in the future STEP 1: To complete this activity you will need to gather a small group of people (6-10) for approximately 30 minutes. This may take a few days to organize. So plan ahead and plan accordingly. Unlike other activities where you can reflect on the unit content and your personal experience to complete the activity, this particular activity will require you to actually conduct an ice breaker activity. That is, it cannot be completed in one setting/at one time. It requires some planning. STEP 2: While you are arranging to have a group available for completing the ice breaker, review the ice breaker activities included in the Ice Breaker Activities Inventory. Choose an activity from those available. The only one that will not work well is Excess Baggage as it is tied to have a training session immediately following the ice breaker, which you will not. Prepare the necessary materials. STEP 3: Assemble the appropriate materials for the ice breaker you have chosen. STEP 4: Schedule the a group to meet (one where people do not know each other too well). STEP 5: Conduct the ice breaker. STEP 6: Complete the report below using as much space as necessary to respond. Be detailed in your responses. Also be honest and critical as you are not being graded on how well you performed the ice breaker, but rather on your understanding of how well it worked and how it could be improved. Name of Activity: Number of People Involved: Location of Activity: Time/Day of Activity: Materials Needed and Used: 1. Overall, how well did the activity work? Did people seem to enjoy it and get to know one another better as a result? 2. What were the shortcomings of the ice breaker? To what degree were these part of the design of the activity (something inherently wrong with the activity) or with the execution of it (something that could have been done better in the preparation and carrying out of the activity — e.g., timing, materials, etc.)? 3. What would you do different in the future to improve the ice breaker activity?
