FLUID PROPERTIES

Description of the experiment
A fluid is any substance which undergoes a continuous and unlimited deformation when acted on
by as sheer force. The fluid is termed as Newtonian if the rate of deformation is directly
proportional to the magnitude of the applied force. Otherwise, the substance is termed as nonNewtonian. It is important to understand the physical properties of fluid before studying the
behavior of fluids in static and dynamic applications. In this experiment, the density of various
liquids are determined by measuring the relative density, the density of various solids are
measured using a pycnometer, the effect of capillary elevation inside the capillary tube due to
surface tension is demonstrated and lastly Archimedes principle is verified using a brass bucket
and cylinder with a level balance. Calculations in the experiment are done using the equations
shown below:
The density of any fluid is defined as the mass per unit volume
𝜌=

𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑙𝑢𝑖𝑑
𝑀
= 3
𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑐𝑐𝑢𝑝𝑖𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝐿

The density of the fluid is given by
𝜌1 = 𝑆 𝑥 𝜌𝑊
Where S, is the specific gravity, ρ1 is the density of the fluid, ρw is the density of water.
