Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
This may be referred to as an educational right that is usually guaranteed by the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to all children living in the United States. The right is also present in
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act as it deals with the regular provision of special
education to handicapped persons as adequately as the needs of the non-handicapped persons. It
is defined to see to it that the general curriculum that meets the grade-level standards is accessed
by all children thus they are in a position to derive educational benefit. Schools are therefore
tasked with the responsibility of providing Free Appropriate Public Education to students living
with disability (O’Laughlin, & Lindle, 2015). This will include specialized instructions that are
meant to adequately prepare the child for employment, independent living or even further
education. It is also a requirement that the students should receive instruction in an environment
that is least restrictive along with their non-disabled peers.
