The Hispanic Tradition Reading Responses for Monday October 15th Select and respond to two of the following questions listed below. The first three questions are drawn from Juan Gonzalez’s Harvest of Empire, Chapter 3-The Spanish Borderlands. The fourth question references primary sources read over these past two weeks. Name and then discuss some of the interests held either by Spain or the U.S for Latin America’s independence. Cuba), highlighted in the Chapter and discuss some of the key points, figures, events, and/or issues that stood out for you and why. 4. Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1651-1695) of Colonial Mexico and Eulia Perez (1780- ? ) from Alta California lived almost a century apart from one another. However, having read the primary texts of their personal testimonies, what might you discern they had in common as women and what might you note distinguished the two from each other. 1. What was Manifest Destiny and explain how it fueled the political agenda and/or
economic enterprises that took place on the Borderlands between the U.S. and

Manifest Destiny was termed by John O’Sullivan in 1845 to mark the summit or peak of
the expansionism. According to Gonzalez (2000), Manifest Destiny replaced the “America for
the Americans” slogan of the Monroe doctrine and advocated for further expansion into Latin
America across the North America region. It used violence to depict imperialism and racism in
U.S and Mexico. In the Manifest Destiny, the Caucasian race was deemed as superior from all
perceptions, while the Latin Americans were perceived to be inferior in their cultural structure as
