Berenbaum, R., Tziraki, C., & Cohen-Mansfield, J. (2017). The right to mourn in
dementia: To tell or not to tell when someone dies in dementia daycare. Death
Studies, 41(6), 353-359 doi:10.1080/07481187.2017.1284953
The article written by three authors talks about the reactions of the people attending
dementia daycare after experiencing the death of others. In this qualitative research, these
authors explore through interviews the beliefs and various practices of workers of adult day
centers for people with dementia about issues that pertain informing them of the death of others.
Many staff members believe that their clients should be informed of the end of life for they have
the emotional capacity to mourn, even though they have cognitive impairment. There are various
ways of telling people with dementia about the death of others, and each case should be handled
and judged differently from the other. Around eighty percentage of the staff feels terrible when
one member of their group loses the life, but many almost ninety-two percent of staff members
would prefer to have more training on how to help their clients grieve the death of one of them.
According to the authors, more research is required on people with dementia and mourning,
more training on staff and various ways to assist staff when they are grieving. These different
methods may help in improvement of the quality of care and minimize burn out in staff.
