Nearly one century ago, the majority of the immigrants arriving in the U.S. were poor
white Europeans from Italy, Ireland, and other parts of Eastern Europe. Within a few
generations, these families had settled and generated large amounts of wealth. Assimilation as a
policy has never succeeded in the U.S. Currently; a large segment of the immigrants into
America is people of color from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and other parts of the world.
