Surname 1 How should we live? I am a 21 year old, dark haired, hardworking, Asian guy who has never looked down upon others or lost hope no matter the situation. I never realized how huge an impact I could make in the society till that moment I decided to change my lifestyle, and mentality associated with racism as a whole. Born in a well up financially, cultural conflict family was a reality to me. In a predominantly white society, I had watched my father being subjected to some sought of racial abuse because of his skin color, something that really disturbed me to an extent of getting traumatized. Besides his skin color, I had watched dad struggle with his physical fitness as a result of gaining excess weight and because of this, I swore by my ancestral blood that I would maintain my physical fitness at all cost and as well never ever look down upon any human being because of their skin color. “Why are human beings so inhumane at times?” At times I keep asking dad whenever we walk down the streets in the neighborhood. People keep staring at me because of my skin color not being as white as theirs. Ever since I joined school, one thing has been my primary focus and dream; to have a society free of the yoke of racism which does hurt to be a subject of. I thus look forward to writing articles to create awareness about it that I believe will help reduce its existence and prevalence. I have attended several schools in my life time and through the journey it has dawned on me that racism is a reality and indeed does exist in abundance and as such measures ought to be put in place to help eradicate it. I recall once a professor explaining to me the situation as it is in the society. He looked at me straight in the eyes and started explaining: “son, study hard, try your best in all that you do and above all trust in God the almighty for unjust is this society of ours. People like us are denied opportunities because of the variation in our skin color.” He paused as I sensed a change in the Surname 2 look at his face from a smile to a bit of sadness. I could sense he was about to say something inspirational. He continued talking with a bit of tremor in his voice and a bit of stammering, “Son, I believe in people like you, the younger generation, that you will change the situation as it currently stands. I have high confidence that you in particular will go a long way in helping end racism in our society.” This words I can all but testify that they have always lingered in my mind and I always memorize them on a daily life. Why should any human being look down upon the other really? Am I not human like any other? Are we not created equal by he who created us? Does skin color make me any different? After all we breathe the same air, the color of our blood is all red, so why should I let another person’s opinion about me demoralize me or even make me give up my dreams? I come from a family with a strong Christian background and as such a strong believer in God. Faith has kept me going and I am always encouraged by the sermons I receive every time I go to church. My passion in writing has driven me to a world exploration where I look forward to learning more facts about racism more so against the dark skinned people like I. I have written several articles calling out against this demoralizing and dehumanizing act. I have recently began a campaign in my neighborhood dubbed all against racism and look forward to championing for it more in the social media platforms available so that people get to know about racism and its impact both at the individual level as well as the family level. I am strongly convinced that courage and determination will take me in this illustrious journey and that people will learn to emulate my example of appreciating people of all races and appreciate all as a creation of one creator, God. At this moment in time, I have seen some change in me as I have stopped worrying about people’s perception about my skin color, instead focus my energy on the positive which is creating awareness and calling against it in all platforms. I believe like my professor told me that Surname 3 I will be the catalyst that is all but required to instigate the change required as far as racism is required. I will not relent in this fight; neither will I be discouraged by the challenges. I am a strong believer that change requires just one person; I to happen. I believe we should live harmoniously like brothers without any form of discrimination, and this is how I live, and how I believe we as a society should live.
