ENGL 1101 Fall 2018 Dr. Rogers Essay 1: Literacy Narrative Strategies: Narration, description, dialogue Required length: 3-4 pages (750-1000 words) Assignment Objectives: You will complete this assignment by developing an essay that describes your relationship to language. Most literacy narratives involve the author's experience with reading and writing, but there are many different literacies to choose from. For example, you might explain how you learned to play a musical instrument, excel at a sport, or master a craft-all activities employing specific vocabularies and requiring specific skills. Your essay should 1) include a thesis stating why your experience is significant; 2) connect in some way with one or more of the literacy narratives we have read and discussed in class; 3) take the shape of a narrative in which some problem or conflict is faced and resolved; and 4) employ the strategies of narration, description, and dialogue to create a vivid effect that engages the reader. me f3 # E ck me Related Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this assignment, students will be able to Use narrative and descriptive strategies to support a persuasive argument Use all the stages of the writing process to produce an effective narrative Design writing to address rhetorical situations, with particular attention to audience, purpose, tone, and stance. Appropriately integrate and cite outside sources in their writing Edit their writing to conform to the conventions of standard written English S IC Purpose: Literacy narratives are a form of memoir, a type of autobiographical writing in which the writer reflects on the significance of his or her language learning. The purpose of autobiographical writing is to create common ground with the audience through shared experience; you must remember that you are not writing about yourself for yourself, but you are communicating with an audience that does not know you well. This means that you cannot take it for granted that the audience knows what you know or sees the world the way you do. You must consider carefully what your audience needs to know to understand the significance of your narrative, and you must select details and sequence events with your purpose in mind. Directions: 1) Read the three literacy narrative essays assigned on the syllabus, and review your notes on them and on the class discussions. 2) Review the Key Features and the Guide to Writing in the Norton Field Guide power point posted in D2L under Links and Resources. 3) Review Chapter 3, Basic Strategies for Writing, in Taking Stands. 4) Draft a scratch outline, then make a first draft of your essay 5) Submit your draft for peer review in class 6) Edit your final draft for standard written English Rhetorical Situation: You can assume an audience of your peers who do not know you well, but who may have experiences similar to yours. Documentation: This is not a formal research project. However, since you will be citing the literacy narratives you read for class, you should use in-text citations and attach a Work Cited list in MLA format.
