This laboratory exercise will utilize on the light trapping method to collect data in two distinct areas under two different light sources. Light trapping is a simple sampling method that uses a translucent material of a known size and a central light source. Ecologists often utilize sampling techniques to gather information about a population or community in which it is difficult to take a census of all individuals in an area of interest. From the data collected, inferences can be made about the entire population or community. The data collected during this exercise can be used to compare species composition and distribution found in the two unique areas as well as assemblage affinity for light source. Objectives 1. To hone ability to create and test hypotheses. 2. To become familiar with common sampling methods for adult invertebrates. 3. To become familiar with identification of common flying invertebrates. Methodology 1. Choose an appropriate location for sampling in your designated area (area with two trees appx. 8ft apart) 2. Tie a rope between both trees about 6ft above the ground. 3. Hang battery powered light source with your designated light source type at the appx. Center of your rope. 4. Take a sheet of know size and drape it over the rope with your light source at the center of the sheet. 5. Pull corner of the sheet taught to an appx. 45-degree angle creating a tent-like shape. 6. At the base of each side place a container for collection in step 8. 7. Turn light source on at designated time and keep it illuminated for 45 minutes. 8. Upon completion of the 45-minute period, using a squirt bottle, spray 70% ethanol on the insects and scrape them into the container. 9. Fill the remainder of the container with 70% ethanol. 10. Sorting and identification will occur in the following lab.
