Most of the companies, therefore, use children in their adverts to gain popularity, an example if the McDonalds which is known for selling kids’ meals and a toy on top as a discount. There are certain corporations and agencies however which beliefs in social and community collaboration. Such corporation works together with community members to stop companies like McDonald's from its exploitations and protect their children, women, and community members via warfare affiliated with democracy, tobacco, water, and climate as well as food among others. These corporations are known as Corporate Accountability (CA). For CA to ensure that members of the public realize the seriousness of the matter in as far as children’s exploitation via advertising is concerned, it has used social media to spread the word via uploading pictures explaining the same. The other objective of CA is to ensure that there is a reduction in climate change and the greenhouse effect. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is a body under the UN which gives the right to five biggest cigarette producers in the World including ‘Big Tobacco’ and by doing this, they contradict the stand of the World Health Organization (WHO) even though they are both fighting to reduce global pollution. CA, therefore, fights for the removal of huge and popular companies from the UNFCCC chart. There are two pictures presented at the bottom of this paper. Even Alghamdi 2 though the pictures do not show a clear relationship to each other, they are however both aiming at impacting positively on the society and its members. The first picture attempts to disclose the veracity and sincerity behind the charity house of the McDonalds and how the chain of restaurants is exploiting children in order to increase their profit margins and revenues alike. From the picture, the children seemed so sad holding cans tagged with Ronald’s campaigns while Ronald McDonald who is the clown is walking away happily with a sack full of cash marked ‘profits’. Research has it that McDonald's uses more funds in adverts as opposed to donations and charities (Simon, 2). The use of pathos as a rhetoric strategy to convince the viewers is evident in the picture. The expression in the picture makes the viewers to pity and feel sorry for the sad children who live in poor conditions as evident by the background the children are standing on. The clown also has not given them any food or cash but just took their money. This shows full exploitation of the children by the clown which the McDonalds. The goal of CA, therefore, to stop McDonald's from exploiting children via seduction means like giving them free toys once they buy kids’ food has been supported by the picture. The second picture is about climate change and negative impact of tobacco industry has impacted negatively on the environment via air pollution. This has been supported by the second picture. The picture depicts a tobacco factory and extreme pollution from a huge burning cigarette acting as a chimney to the factory. To show the negative effects posed by the ‘Big Tobacco’ companies, CA uses pathos to try and explain to UNFCCC that such companies should not have a place in their docket. Three rhetoric persuasion strategies which are pathos, logos, Kairos, and ethos have been used in the second picture. Pathos in the first place has been used via showing a huge cigarette burning. The use of logical means to explain to UNFCCC to not Alghamdi 3 give a chance to ‘Big Tobacco’ companies shows the use of logos. Moreover, the fact that the picture was printed after the who banned ‘Big Tobacco’ companies from participating in climate change meetings shows the use of Kairos. The picture also has the real names of the companies, the publishers as well as various stakeholders to prove its credibility. This way, the UNFCCC will be sure taken into consideration what it says. This shows the use of ethos to convince UNFCCC that the ‘Big Tobacco’ companies should not have a place in their docket. The caption “this has to stop” in the capital and red colored letters prove the seriousness of CA on the fact that they are working at accomplishing their main goal of ensuring that they have a positive impact on the members of the society in as far as environmental protection is concerned. There are two different approaches presented by the pictures. The first picture focusses on people, more so the kids while the second picture is related to industries and corporations. CA, however, manages both the pictures to accomplish its goals. It uses pathos in both pictures to emotionally persuade the viewers via the use of unhappy and despondent children in the first image while in the second image it uses a huge cigarette polluting the environment with its smoke. Also since the second picture was printed after the WHO banned ‘Big Tobacco’ companies from participating in climate change meetings shows the use of Kairos. Both the pictures, however, are objective towards protecting the environment and people from organizational/company abuse, even though they are related to divergent issues. In the first image, CA tries to show to the people that it is not right for McDonald's to exploit their children by giving them toys when they eat in kid’s food in its chain of restaurants. It also shows that McDonald's has become popular for their children and they are taking more money from them as compared to the charities and donations they claim to be doing to the children. It, therefore, protests against the exploitation of children by fast food companies with the likes of McDonald's Alghamdi 4 to gain profits at the expense of advertising that they are making huge donations and helping children. Research also has it that every “American citizen earning more than $51,000 and donates 5% of their income to charity will have donated 15 times more than McDonald's would have” (Simon, 2). The second image, on the other hand, is affiliated to the negative environmental impacts that tobacco industry brings. The main goal of UNFCCC is to protect the environment. In contrast, they are making ‘Big Tobacco’ companies have a place in their docket. CA, on the other hand, is urging UNFCCC to exclude Big Tobacco from its committee. It shows in the second image how Big Tobacco is causing devastating and extreme harm to the environment. In essence, therefore, the two pictures work towards achieving the same goal of protecting the environment as well as people living in it. The different rhetorical persuasion techniques including pathos, logos, Kairos, and ethos have been used in the pictures in different manners as explained above. Environmental and Children Protection
Raising revenues and increasing profit margins among most companies and corporations
have always been a major drive. Most of the companies, therefore, use children in their adverts
to gain popularity such as the case of McDonalds, which is known for selling kids’ meals and a
toy on top as a discount. There are certain corporations and agencies, however, which believes in
social and community collaboration. Such corporations work together with community members
to stop companies like McDonald's from exploiting children, women, and community members.
These corporations are known as Corporate Accountability (CA). For CA to ensure that members
of the public realize the seriousness of the matter in as far as children’s exploitation through
advertising is concerned, it uses social media to spread the word by uploading pictures
explaining the same. The other objective of CA is to ensure that there is a reduction in climate
change and the greenhouse effect (Bragg). The United Nations Framework Convention on
Climate Change (UNFCCC) is a body under the UN which gives the right to five biggest
cigarette producers in the World including ‘Big Tobacco’ and by doing this, they contradict the
stand of the World Health Organization (WHO) even though they are both fighting to reduce
global pollution. CA, therefore, fights for the removal of huge and popular companies from the
UNFCCC chart. More importantly, corporate accountability is at the center of environmental and
children protection, and for that case, it should be strengthened if we are to realize any
significant gains.
