Theories are made up of ideas attempting to structure thinking around a specific happening. Your readings for this week introduce the ideas of phenomena, concepts, propositions, and assumptions. This assignment is designed to help you think about those four aspects and explain the connections between each to help strengthen your understanding of the foundations and working parts of theory.

Define the following four terms in your own words, citing at least one source: phenomena, concept, preposition, and assumptions.

Review your definitions and think of an example from your day-to-day life or your practice experience that includes each of the four ideas.

For example, falls in clinical practice is a phenomenon you encounter. The idea that dementia patients are at greater risk for falls is a related concept. The related proposition is that dementia is related to falling in some way. An underlying assumption is that patients with dementia don't intend to fall.

Explain how all four aspects of your example work together to form the basis for a testable theory.

Cite a minimum of two sources in-text and in an APA-formatted reference page or slide.

Format your assignment as one of the following:

  • 15- to 20-slide presentation with detailed speaker notes
  • 15- to 20-minute oral presentation with detailed speaker notes
  • 1,050- to 1,225-word paper
  • Another format approved by your instructor

Aspects of a theory

Definition of the different aspects
Phenomena are the plural of a phenomenon which means a fact, circumstance observable
or observed. Additionally, we can describe it in a scientific context as something which is
perceived to exist or to occur. The meaning of the word, however, does contrast with the way the
term is understood in general usage as something which is outstanding or extraordinary. It is
categorized in a few ways which include; natural phenomena, social phenomena, visual
phenomena, and psychological phenomena. This is a vital component of theory in that it puts the
entire theory into the desired perspective. Without phenomena in theory, then it becomes unrelatable in real life (M libraries, 2018).
A concept is primarily a mental representation, some abstract objects or the vital building
blocks of the beliefs and thoughts about a certain subject matter. It is important to note that
concepts do play a substantial, vital role in cognition. They can be understood in several ways; as
mental representations, as abilities to cognitive agents and as abstract objects. In theory, a
concept acts as a symbolic representation of the actual message of the theory. It makes the theory
to be understood by the people.
A preposition categorically expresses the relation that exists between two entities with
one being the one represented by the used preposition. Some of the relational meaning that it
implies are those of; time, place, cause and instrument. In normal circumstances, a preposition
must always be followed by its complement. However, in some situations, this may not always
be the case since the complement is absent or has taken the first position in the specified clause.

In theory, a proposition is quite crucial since it expresses the relationship between the different
components and elements to make them understandable before an audience (Watson, 2017).
Well, an assumption is an idea, fact or principle that is used as a basis or base which
cannot be factually proved. Additionally, we can say that it is a unilaterally accepted thing which
is assumed to be true or certain to happen despite there not being any proof to back this. On the
other hand, a theory is essentially a set of ideas or principles which does underpin a system or an
action.it is through an assumption that a theory is believed to be true despite there not being any
proof to back it up as being either true or false (Junior, 2007).
