Why? The most interesting selection of the first half, but by no means the best, was Scherzo for Charles Brown. Benoit described it as being a song that would be played if Charlie Brown were to take acid. Sure enough it sounded just like that. The song was played in two different keys for each hand. The sound was very dissonant and not easy to listen to. But there would be a break right after that brought an incredibly pretty sound to it. This was probably due to the consonance that was heard right after such dissonance with the chorus. The number had very pretty playes between the chorus with mellow harmonic chord changes that flowed together like water. I would love to hear it again. 3. What was the most interesting selection in the second half? Why? The most interesting selection of the second half was Blue Rondo a la Turk. It was played incredibly well by Benoit on the piano. The beginning of the song was very standard but as soon as the trio broke it down for the cool jazz portion of the song things got very interesting. There seemed to be a lot of cross talk between Hughes and Tate on beats and accents throughout each section of the song.. The high hat timing was a great combination in conjunction with the walking bass. Having Benoit add colors with his improvisation was great. It was amazing that all of the trio got their own solo. I specifically enjoyed the drummer solo. It was one of the few solos that I was able to keep count on through the entirety of his solo. Then the band came back together to finish the melody and finished very tightly. . 4. General Commentary • Interesting aspects on the program: The fact that David Benoit is a radio personality, that I listen to him and was able to hear him play live was great. The setup of Benoit facing the band was fun. He fact that Benoit went to El Camino felt like it was a homecoming for him to play here. • Styles represented: Cool Jazz, Bop, Solo, Avant-Garde 5. Any Questions? How long has Benoit been playing together with is bandmates? 6. What was your overall opinion of this concert? It was great! There was a high amount of energy. Benoit was able to keep the show even more entertaining by giving commentary throughout the show about his life, upcoming selection or working at Kjazz. The chemistry between the bandmates was great and entertaining. 7. Your Rating: from 1 (low) to 10 (high)? And why? 9. The music was great, the band was entertaining, Benoit showed out but there was still a few songs that I was not too fond of.
