Should Marijuana Be Legalized? Thesis: The issue regarding the use and legalization of marijuana has caused much controversy in contemporary society with some arguing for and against it, and in my opinion, legalizing marijuana will help more than it will hurt. Evidence One: Statistics National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Marijuana: What Is the Scope of Marijuana Use in the United States. NIDA, 2018. Retrieved from https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/what-scopemarijuana-use-in-united-states The article gives the statistics on the use of marijuana in the US over the years. It outlines that men use the drug more than women according to the study conducted between 2007 -2014. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that over 22.2 million people use marijuana within a month and thus it is the most frequently used illegal drug in the United States. Within the age groups, adolescents and the youths are the most common abusers. Even though the use of Marijuana has reduced over the last five years, the survey done by Monitoring the Future indicates that the use and attitude towards the drug are high among the 8th to 12th graders. For example, in 2016, 35.6 percent of 12th graders had used marijuana in the year. 2011 reported over 456,000 drug-related emergencies in which the highest record was for Marijuana, of which, 13% were adolescents of age 12-17. I would utilize research to support my thesis that marijuana should be legalized to reduce the crime rates especially, in juveniles. I would also use it to argue on individual perception and attitude regarding the use of Marijuana in the midst of the ongoing debates on its legalization. Evidence Two: Examples Carver, Raymond. “cathedral.” 1983. http://www.giuliotortello.it/ebook/cathedral.pdf The story depicts two men, one of them blind and the other can see. The sighted man tries to describe how a cathedral looks like which remains a mystery to the blind man. The two men smoke marijuana, and under its influence, they manage to draw the cathedral. The story presents various drugs consumed by the primary characters including marijuana. It highlights both the positive and negative effects of the use of marijuana. For the narrator, the use of marijuana is a way of avoiding his dissatisfactions in life. On the positive side, it leads to the cathedral-drawing which remains a good experience for both men. I would utilize the story to support my thesis that marijuana should be legalized because of its medicinal value and its relaxation effects on the mind. Evidence Three: Testimonials Wilkinson, S., Yarnell, S., Radhakrishnan, R., Ball, S., & D’Souza, D. (2016). Marijuana Legalization: Impact on Physicians and Public Health. Annual Review of Medicine Journal, 67, 453-466. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4900958/ The article discusses the impact of Marijuana legalization on public health. It asserts that the legalization that is increasing in several states across the US for both recreational and medical use of marijuana has created several issues in the field of public health that needs to be addressed. The writers’ research is aimed at understanding the impact of this legalization on health-related problems. I would use this article to understand the views of those who oppose legalization of marijuana and their reasons. The article remains critical for my research because it will give me a diverse opinion on the negative impact of marijuana while comparing them with the positive ones to strengthen my thesis.
