Description

Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

1. State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1.
2. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position and explain why you selected these specific reasons.
3. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website.
4. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position.
5. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases.
6. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

  • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
  • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
  • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Identify the informal fallacies, assumptions, and biases involved in manipulative appeals and abuses of language.
  • Create written work utilizing the concepts of critical thinking.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in critical thinking skills and informal logic.

Running head: CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCE Conflicting Viewpoints on Alternative Source of Power Eric T Smith Professor Ronald Davenport Critical Thinking: PHI 210 October 12, 2018 1 CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCE The issue of finding an alternative source of energy to replace fossil fuels has been growing globally because of the concerns of the depletion of fossil fuels. The concerns have resulted in the asking of the question of whether alternative energy can effectively replace fossil fuel. The continued development and improvement in the renewable sources of energy provides some proof that renewable energy can replace fossil fuel. I stand to agree with the issue of alternative sources of energy replacing fossil fuels. However, some proponents of fossil fuels argue that the alternative sources of energy would not effectively replace fossil fuels claiming that even after a decade of rampant growth of the solar energy and the other renewable sources of energy, it can barely generate the substantial energy required by the country. There is also the aspect of the unreliability of renewable energy where some nations may have cold months in winter where there is no wind nor solar. The contribution of the wind and the nuclear power to the world's total energy demand is limited because they are more expensive than fossil fuels. The most helpful part in the opposing view of the alternative source of energy barely generating the substantial energy required to run some of the heavy machinery is the fact that the opponents of alternative sources of energy are cautious in their approach to seek alternative sources of energy. The statement is true in the sense that the population of the world continues to grow and along with the demands for industrial goods grow as well. The continued growth of industries means an increase to the demand for energy that the alternative sources may not provide. The most noticeable aspect of believing this view is the need to cautious when approaching some of the actions that would affect the development of some of the industries. 2 CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCE The element of the unreliability of the renewable sources of energy particularly the wind and the solar energy is true because of its reliance on weather. Weather changes and some areas may witness extended calm and cloudy periods that are not favorable for the generation of power. Such periods would affect the production of energy and may affect the functioning of some industries. Some people may advocate for the nuclear energy as the alternative source, but it has some risks particularly on safety thus making it more complicated. The most noticeable fact in this view is the issue of weather changes that might not have been considered when thinking of the alternative sources of energy. Wind and nuclear power contribution to the world's energy demand might be limited because of the price value involved. The generation of nuclear power is expensive considering the materials involved in the generation process that could be more complicated with the issue of safety. Wind and solar energy would require a large piece of land to place the solar panels and the wind turbines to generate energy. The large space would require the sacrificial of other activities in the land to try to produce the needed energy. The seeking of alternative sources of energy is a complicated and lengthy process. It may be challenging to find the best alternative source to the present fossil fuels considering the aspects of reliability, sufficiency, and value. The consideration of the upsides and the downsides of something is crucial for one to arrive at the best possible solution. The other alternative sources should complement the already available fossil fuels. 3 CONFLICTING VIEWPOINTS ON ALTERNATIVE POWER SOURCE References Farret, F. A., & Simoes, M. G. (2006).
