Leadership Questions – Traits, Behaviors and Relationships Refer to Exhibit 2.7 below (and in textbook p. 53) which shows how some leaders treat In-Group Subordinates compared to how they treat Out-Group Subordinates. Effective leaders need emotional and social intelligence to be aware of their impact on subordinates and should strive to treat all subordinates equally. 1. In-Group/Out-Group Followers: a) Describe an example of a leader from your past experience who created an “out group” of followers through their behaviors and traits. (Please be sure to discuss someone who created an “out group”, which means there was also an “in group” of subordinates which this leader treated more favorably than the “out group”). This question is not asking about a poor leader who treats everyone badly. b) Identify and describe the specific behaviors this leader exhibited, as well as the leader’s characteristics. c) What were the consequences of this leader’s treatment of the “out group” to the department, other employees, and/or company? d) Describe the characteristics and behaviors this leader could change to avoid the “out group” and create a happier, honest work culture where people feel respected for their unique talents and views? 2. Leader-Member Exchange: a) In your own words, explain the concept of Leader-Member Exchange. Please avoid a simple textbook definition. b) Identify and evaluate specific behaviors of a leader you have known who engaged in LeaderMember Exchange in the management of his/her subordinates by adapting/flexing their style and communication in order to create trust with each individual subordinate. c) What would you need to do (or stop doing) to build a partnership using Leader-Member Exchange with your most difficult employee (boss or peer if you are not in a managerial position)? 3. Personality, Behavior and Traits: a) First, identify what you believe are your own greatest strengths (behaviors and traits). Explain how they have helped you to succeed. b) Then please go to: https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/home and complete the “Brief Strengths Test” questionnaire. You need to register before you can access the “Questionnaires”. After registering, click on Questionnaires and select “Brief Strengths Test.” Be sure to include your results in your narrative for this question. c) Compare the results of the “Brief Strengths Test” questionnaire with your own perception of your strengths. Are they the same, or did the test reveal some differences? d) How will you use your strengths to be a more effective leader going forward?

1. In-Group/Out-Group Followers
a. Describe an example of a leader from your past experience who created an “out
group” of followers through their behaviors and traits. This question is not asking
about a poor leader who treats everyone badly.
My experience working in a restaurant before was a unique one. I had the opportunity to identify
how our manager soon identified his in-group and out-group soon after the restaurant was
opened. The leader had established a close relationship with cooks and the other who worked in
the kitchen more than the waiters and waitress.
b. Identify and describe the specific behaviors this leader exhibited, as well as the
leader’s characteristics.
The manager had the tendency of offering more tips to the cooks on the restaurants weekly
performance review. He always recommended them for the best foods they cook and the
expertise they have brought to the company. On the other side, he always criticized the waiters
for delaying service provision to the customers. He used to say that the waiters did not have good
communication skills which caused the restaurant to lose a lot of customers.
