Definition
Succession planning refers to the process whereby new leaders in an organization are
identified and then developed to ensure they are well qualified to take up the roles of old leaders
after their death if retirement (McKee & Froelich, 2016).
Importance of succession planning in an organization
One of the benefits associated with succession planning is that it provides an opportunity
to the management to identify a successor and study their behavior over a given period. That
way, the administration recognizes the perspective characteristics of the successor and
determines their suitability (Groves, 2018). Identifying the prospective successor presents the
management with an opportunity to nurture the candidate to make them qualified for the job that
awaits them in the future. That way, it is possible for these candidates to deliver quality results
enhancing the ability of the organization to add value to society.
The second importance of succession planning is that it helps in reducing employee
turnover as it facilitates retention. The existence of employee succession culture in an
organization supports the employees to better their performance in a bid to be identified for
succession (McKee & Froelich, 2016). Succession, therefore, leads to the ability of an
organization to yield high-value products and services for the clients. That way, the company
