In Favor of Gun Control
From my perspective, I am in favor of gun control, because I think that gun
control is not serious in America. According to the survey, the U.S. has a higher rate
of gun homicides than most countries, there are at least one shooting every day in the
United States in average and nearly half of all U.S. citizens own guns, which are easy
to cause shooting accident. As a result, in my opinion, American government should
strengthen the power of gun control. Then I will express my opinion and reasons in
this article.
Some of Americans do not have a well gun sense. So we always heard about
some news about some innocent people are killed in shooting accident. On February
14, 2018, a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in
Parkland, Florida, killing seventeen students and staff members and injuring
seventeen others. How terrible about it! After this accident, the shooting sparked
unprecedented demands for gun control and spurred the founding of Never Again
MSD, a political action committee founded by students from the school to demand
Yexin Shi 2
legislative action from lawmakers on firearms. If we have some laws to limit these
violent, we would not see too much shooting accidents nearby.
The United States has too few restrictions on the legal firing of its citizens, which
is a common situation in most states of the US. American citizens can fire when they
meet the situation, such as being intruded private residence, being subjected to
personal threats or in an uncontrollable situation. Maybe it strengthens citizens’
ability to defend themselves. However I don’t think it is fair to everybody. Is it
meaning that I can fire to anyone who I think he is a criminal and then I have no legal
sanction? There is no doubt that the answer is NO! In addition, there are fewer
restrictions on police shootings in the United States; American law gives them a great
deal of power, allowing them to subdue suspects in the first place. As a result, in the
face of police law enforcement, you have better to follow the instructions of the police,
or you could easily be charged with obstruction of law or contempt with serious
consequences. According to the survey, there are about 400 innocent people is shot by
policeman in the United States every year, among which 98 percent are male, 56
percent are white, 42 percent are black, and 53 percent are young people aged 18 to
30, which sounds terrible
On the other hand, I am from China, whose government has many serious laws to
control guns. Guns are absolutely forbidden in the hands of the Chinese, you cannot
see guns under normal circumstances, even policeman without guns. Maybe it has
Yexin Shi 3
some disadvantages, but Shootings are rare in China. So I think Chinese government
do it better than American government about controlling guns.
In short, I hope that American government can strengthen the power of guns
controlling, which not only protect citizens in their country but also protect national
security.

Against Gun Control
Control is the set of laws that governments use their power to limit their citizens
to own guns, which has many advantages in most country. However, do you know
more than half of American against gun control? (Huffington Post n.p.) Maybe
someone think it is unbelievable that gun control is very useful way to limit the gun,
which can result in dangers, but there are still more than half of American against it.
From my perspective, American against gun control because of these aspects: laws,
self-defense, government and so on.
American citizens have right to keep and bear Arms. Second Amendment to the
United States Constitution announced, “A well regulated Militia being necessary to
the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be
infringed.”, which is a significant part of United States Bill of Rights. As time went
on after this amendment had announced, many American citizens accepted and agreed
that gun rights are part of the American tradition. (Hofstadter n.p.) And they always
bought a gun for themselves as gifts when they celebrated a holiday. As a result, I
think government cannot use Gun Control to deprive of citizens’ right of owning
guns.
Yexin Shi 2
Citizens need to own guns to ensure their self-defense capability. According
to the survey, the average population density in the United States in 2010 was 87.5
people per square mile. (United States Census n.p.) In addition, it is widely
acknowledged that The United States has a large land area, which means when
citizens meet emergency and the police may not be able to arrive in time, they have
ability to protect themselves well. Besides, guns can help citizens to intimidate
offender. For example, if the law allows citizens to have guns, and there are many
citizens to have weapons, the deterrent will be enormous. For example, if one night
some offenders want to rob for money or valuables, they need to choose between
families with guns and without guns. Which one do you think they will choose? There
is no doubt that they will choose family with no guns because it is easier to achieve
their aim.
Widespread gun ownership has created a large economic chain of interests in the
United States, which provide a large amount of profit to American government and
create a lot of job opportunity. For example, in 2016, the federal tax revenue from gun
sales was $384.3 billion, and the state received nearly $2,695 billion in taxes. This
sum amounts to $650 billion in taxes, which is of course unceasing revenue for both
the federal government and the state government. (NSSF n.p.) Moreover, more than
300, 000 directly or indirectly related jobs have been created in the arms
manufacturing industry. (NSSF n.p.) Given the economic benefits of guns, I'm even
Yexin Shi 3
less in favor of gun control. On account of gun control can make the impact on the
U.S. economy, which may cause social instability more seriously.

Preventing Terrorism
Do you know the September 11 attacks? The September 11 attacks were a
series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda
against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, which
killed 2,996 people, injured over 6,000 others, and caused at least $10 billion in
infrastructure and property damage. In Addition, people died of 9/11-related cancer
and respiratory diseases in the months and years following the attacks. As a result, I
am in favor of preventing terrorism because it is terrible to get so serious damage. The
reason why I am in favor of preventing terrorism is these attacks cause casualties,
social panic and economic loss.
Every terrorist attack results in a large number of casualties. Such as the
September 11 attacks, 125 people were killed instantly at Pentagon and over 2600
people died in this attack site. The number of deaths from terrorist attacks has risen
nine fold since the start of the century, and the number of terrorist attacks and deaths
around the world has risen dramatically since the American invasion of Iraq in
2003.According to statistics, a total of 32,658 people were killed in terrorist attacks
worldwide in 2014, an increase of 80% compared to 2013.The attacks took place
mainly in Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Pakistan and Syria, five countries with large
Muslim populations. Although the death toll has fallen in recent years, the number of
terrorist attacks has increased year by year.
Shi 2
Terrorism can easily cause social panic. Take "9/11" as an example. After the
event, the American society was full of terror and danger, and the American people
began to worry about their living environment. Their lives have been changed by the
terrorist attacks. They no longer prefer a convenient plane, but choose a car, which
they think is safe. But that's not the case. According to some estimates, 40, 000 people
die on U.S. highways each year, far more than are killed in U.S. in-flight accidents.
The government should guide the mass media to deliver the right public information,
guide the right public opinion tendency and dredge the audience's emotions.
Terrorism has a huge impact on the world economy, and every terrorist attack
causes an economic downturn. "9/11" is a good example. The first impact of the
attack on the economy was uncertainty about the consequences of U.S. economic
growth and military retaliation, which delayed investment by investors in developed
countries and led to rising unemployment. The global stock market downturn,
affecting residents' income levels, resulting in insufficient aggregate demand; It also
raises the risk premium for the emerging markets most affected by the slowdown in
the us, forcing them to pay more for the recovery. Moreover, the biggest impact on
the economy of a terrorist attack is a shock to confidence It is difficult to grasp the
real cost of terrorism to the world. U.S. spending on domestic security has risen from
$46 billion to $76 billion since 2001.Airports and ports have also stepped up their
security prosecutions. At Bremen port, Germany's largest container terminal, each
container must undergo laser inspection. Airlines, shippers and shippers not only have
to spend time fighting terrorism, security checks and other procedures have also
reduced the efficiency of the entire international trading system. These invisible
damages are difficult to quantify.
