The Lakota Way
Question 1
Mitakuye Oyasin is a word derived from the Lakota language which represents how the
people in the community connect. The concept can be found in several Yankton Sioux Prayers
and other Lakota communities’ ceremonial prayers. When translated in English, the phrase
stands for “we are all related,” “all my relation” or “all my relatives.” The Lakota people use it as
a prayer of unity and harmony with other things and creatures in the environment including other
individuals, birds, animals, insects, plants, rivers, mountains, valleys, and rocks. Mitakuye
Oyasin is, therefore, a valuable aspect of the people’s believes and daily activities as it brings
peace amongst them....
