By way of an answer, the distinguishing between two brands of governments is made by Machiavelli: The rule of a Prince and his servants (who possess no power independent of the Prince’s permission) versus the rule of a Prince and his Barons (who possess their own lands, hereditary titles, and subjects) (p 17). On one hand, the Turkish monarchy has one ruler and many servants, on the other; Frances’ King governs with the aid of ancient class of hereditary nobles (p 17). Obviously, the King governing the first Kingdom possesses more power thus it is harder to take away power from the Turk than ousting Frances’ King (p 18). Though it would be difficult to take away the Turkish Kingdom, it would be easier to maintain since once a new prince was in, he would be invulnerable due to an absence of rivals to power and no need to split authority with petty nobility (p 18). By contrast, dethroning Frances’ King is easier, but maintaining the monarchy is harder without the assistance of the nobility. Not a sure thing to rely upon! After setting this framework, Machiavelli terminates that Alexander’s subdue over Persia fell into the former category (p 19). Darius maintained absolute control over his Kingdom like the Turks (p 19). Once Alexander accomplished his annexation of that Kingdom, there was practically no way he, nor his successors, could be extricated. Therefore the big question here is did Alexander the Great fail in succession planning? Since he thought not of the future after he was gone which resulted in tearing apart of his cosmic empire subsequent to his death. CLASS DISCUSSION References Machiavelli, N., & Viroli, M. (2008).
