Sore Throat

1. How would each of the traditions define the causes, symptoms, and treatments?
Most religious/magico/supernatural groups view sore throat as an infirmity inflicted on a human
being as a result of wrongdoing. For instance in traditional Italian folk medicine, sore throat was
one of the ailments that arose from not having the protection of God because of bad behavior
(Romeo, Gallo and Tagarelli, 2015).
In the holistic sense, sore throat is caused by imbalance of body and spirit. This imbalance of
body and spirit is in turn brought about by either over-indulgence or under-indulgence of specific
food groups, beverages, or practices connected to the spiritual. Everything has to be done in
balance to work together for one’s well-being.
Medically, sore throat is mainly caused by irritation from not having enough fluids, or from
continuous coughing brought about by bacterial or viral infections. Some viral infections causing
sore throats include croup, measles, influenza, chickenpox, and mononucleosis. Bacterial
infections include group A streptococcus ("Sore throat - Symptoms and causes", 2018).
2. What questions would each tradition ask?
The religious circles would ask questions such as: what act have you done that upset God? Acts
that upset God would include things such as speaking ill of or doubting supernatural beings or
their vassals. In such case God would respond in kind by making the person speak hoarsely or
lose their voices altogether. An example is when Zechariah questioned angel Gabriel about his
promised son (Holy Bible (New International Version), 2011).

ASSIGNMENT

Questions asked holistically would include: have you been eating or thinking different than usual
lately? Such questions would attempt to pinpoint the exact time or practice that was against the
norm. These new ways or practices may have upset the balance and harmony that was
maintaining good health.
Biomedical questions would be specific. They would try to go to the root of the problem. Such
questions include: Have you been drinking enough water? How long has it persisted? These
questions enable the physician to come to a more conclusive prognosis.
3. What solutions would each tradition offer?
Religious solutions to sore throats would be to make amends with the divine. Steps to ensuring a
good standing with God would be going to pilgrimage sites, invoking saints and angels, using
holy oil and holy water, etc. For example, Italian folk medicine would encourage invoking Saint
Biagio, using holy oil, and wearing Saint Biagio’s necklace (Romeo, Gallo and Tagarelli, 2015).
Holistic remedies to sore throats would be restoring balance to the way of life. If certain
practices were determined to cause the sore throat, such practices would have to be stopped to
restore balance. A good routine would be encouraged. An example of such a routine would be
eating a balanced diet, observing physical and environmental hygiene, keeping good thoughts
and meditating, etc.
Medical remedies and treatments to sore throats would include cough syrups and cough drops.
This remedy would especially be prescribed if the sore throat is caused by coughs. In most cases,
lozenges would be used to relieve the sore throat.
Weight Gain

ASSIGNMENT

4

1. How would each of the traditions define the causes, symptoms, and treatments?
Supernatural causes of weight gain and obesity would be attributed to spells cast by witches or
evil spirits. For instance, some Christian traditions attribute weight gain to gluttony caused by a
demon called Belphegor (Guiley, 2009).
Holistically, weight gain is caused by poor diet or little to no exercise. Poor diet would be
described as eating too much junk food full of starch and fats. This kind of diet when combined
with no exercise, leads to accumulation of fat in the body.
Scientifically, weight gain is attributed to excess intake of unhealthy foods and inactivity. For
instance, high intake of foods reach in fats and calories may result in obesity. Also, lack of
exercise and leading a sedentary lifestyle may result in weight gain ("Obesity Guide: Causes,
Symptoms and Treatment Options", 2018).
