Description

Treatment Overview

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the required articles for this week. Over the course of the past weeks, we have considered the use of medications in the treatment of various psychological disorders. This discussion will provide you with an opportunity to give an informed appraisal on the use of drugs to treat disorders and defend your stance based on your judgment of the literature. In your initial post, describe what you believe are the greatest strengths and weaknesses of using the medications to treat psychological disorders. Evaluate the employment of psychoactive drugs in the treatment of disorders over the lifespan from both an ethical and risk-benefits perspective. Summarize the theories of psychiatric disease and the scientific rationale behind its treatment through the employment of drug therapies. Explain what you believe to be the greatest challenges in the use of psychoactive medications over the next several years. Support your statements with references and logical arguments.

Overview of the Drug
The selected psychoactive drug is ephedrine. It is both a stimulant and a medication. It is
mainly used during spinal anesthesia to prevent low blood pressure. Its usefulness is also

exhibited in narcolepsy, asthma and obesity. It is a bronchodilator and d econgestant which works
by constricting blood vessels and reducing swelling in the passages of the nasal region to allow
an individual breath more easily. It is classified as an adrenergic which implies that it has a role
in central nervous system hence an effect on brain function. It causes elevated catecholamines
release and has both beta and alpha adrenergic properties. Overall, it has a short duration of
action meaning that its pharmacokinetic processes are fast. It is also known for its pronounced
CNS effects when used during spinal anesthesia to prevent low blood pressure (Campbell &
Young, 2017). This paper will address the various pharmacological aspects of ephedrine on the
basis of psychiatric disorders indicated for the drug and the issues associated with its use.
Mechanism of Action
Ephedrine stimulates beta and alpha-adrenergic receptors resulting into norepinephrine
release from the storage sites. Additionally, it produces cardiac stimulation with increased
diastolic and systolic blood pressure as well as relaxing bronchial smooth musc...
