Environmental conservation is a topic that has been discussed at length in many settings.
Almost everyone knows that to save the environment, there are several things they have to cut
such as emissions, trash, and the food they eat. However, in a surprisingly successful and
fascinating journey, Colin Beavan and his wife Michelle and daughter undertook an experiment
which aimed to cut on all carbon footprint for a year. In a journey that had six phases, the family
took what at first seemed like an impossible journey and demonstrated how the average person
can cut down on a lot of things that cause environmental degradation. After viewing this
documentary and my carbon impact to the environment, I am encouraged to adopt a life of
sustainability since the Beavans have demonstrated that it is possible.
Overall, the documentary starts with the introduction to the family where Collins explains
his radical experiment to reduce the family’s environmental impact. We are introd uced to
Michelle who is Colin’s wife and a TV and shopping addict. She also explains that the
experiment would allow her to rethink her consumption since she was diagnosed with
prediabetes. The family is completed by the young Isabella. The first heartbreaking moment
comes with the family having to give up their TV to cut down on electricity. In the first phase of
the project, the family adopts a ‘no trash’ approach by cutting out packaging for food, and
disposable items like diapers for Isabella and tissue paper. In these early phases, the participants
