Social media communication creates a dynamic way of interaction and engagement between people irrespective of their locations across the world. The proliferation of internet connection has made it possible for faster connection and communication. For instance, Social media is responsible in the engineering of the largest social engagement methods of our daily lives through the creation of tough competing platforms in delivery of the social networking. Among the largest popular social media networking sites around the globe are Facebook and twitter. For instance according to the current statistics, Facebook has over 1.3 billion users across the world and is projected to reach 3 billion users by the year 2021. Twitter on the other hand has over 800 million users across the world and is expected to rise rapidly in the coming years. Through stimulus discussion on the application and services of these two social media networks, this paper will provide categorical similarities and differences between Facebook and twitter. Pertinently, the discourse will focus on how the user generated content is useful in creation of business and social connections in these platforms. Understanding Facebook and Twitter is within the perspective of user interface and the ease of use on the sites. First Twitter celebrates to have one of the easiest methods and features of creating a business platform. The ease of creation of a business platform in twitter is identified due to direct features. Facebook, on the other hand, is impeded by its complexity and therefore requires further knowledge of how the site works. Nonetheless, one can create a business Facebook page, although the steps are complex, they provide an official communication capacity for its users and intended audience. Both sites provides the user with the opportunity to share information to followers and friends generated as people connect in the platforms. These forms a network of individuals who have direct access to the information 2 Facebook Vs Twitter received from a tweet or Facebook status update. Fundamental features in twitter include timeline, notification, message, and moments, features used to propagate user generated content. Facebook on the other hand provides a user profile as well as a business page through which social interactions can be converted to business engagements or even a slight separation between the two. User generated content from Facebook can be easily shared with other people through the creation of a tag popular to many users or a trending phrase to ensure the information is spread across. Further, this can be achieved through sharing of a page link where individuals can share links across multiple platforms to engage with the message posted or the page itself. For twitter on the other hand, the limitation on the number of characters enables individuals to retweet a message across to other followers therefore giving the message new life each time it’s retweeted. This creates more visibility of your business or campaign or products on twitter than on Facebook. (Global social media ranking 2018). Further Facebook has generated mechanism through which it has appropriated payment mechanisms to supplement the business pages. Here, individuals can conduct business fully and complete their transaction through the help of the Facebook page. Fundamental application of tweeter and Facebook are based on the user-generated content and its impact at social, business and political levels. User-generated content is implied by the use of status update in Facebook and tweets of tweeter platform. The lifetime of these contents determine the user implications and the effectiveness of these tools as not only forms of communication but also as business platforms. Comparison between a tweet and Facebook status indicate that a tweet has a limited lifespan as opposed to a status update. Statistic of usergenerated content indicates that engagement with a tweet takes place within an hour of its publishing (Kelly, 2016). This is generated from ninety-two percent of the user-generated statistics on behavior. On the other hand, a Facebook status update denote a longer engagement lifespan as it’s visible on individual timelines for days. The lifespan statistics of the user3 Facebook Vs Twitter generated content has pertinent implications to how people engage with both platforms. For instance, due to the lifespan of each format, the frequency of posting is higher on twitter as opposed to Facebook. This makes tweeter to be highly engaged with people while Facebook builds more relevance in long-term conversations. The effectiveness of Facebook and tweeter is based on their ability to pass information or message fast across distances. The speed of the message movement has a direct relationship to the format of the platforms and the mode of engagement with the message. For instance, the tweeter has a limitation on the number of characters in a tweet. This makes the message precise and can easily be shared from one person to the next. If individuals engage with the message, they retweet it on their platform and give it traction (Indian and Grieve, 2014). This provides speed to the message from one individual to the next. On the other hand, Facebook status updates have no limitation on length and therefore people take longer as they engage with the material. This slows down the process of movement of information. The distinction is therefore created, for more time-sensitive information, tweeter provides the best platform that individuals can employ to disseminate information. Facebook, however, is a powerful information distribution channel as people engage with the material effectively (Carter, 2018). The speed is however linked to the optimal posting time on Facebook and tweeter sites. Recent study indicating the behavior of tweets and Facebook status posting determine how fast and far the content can get. For instance, Facebook posting during the day at noon and evening around 9pm is more effective. On tweeter, posting is more effective during the day at around 5pm. Facebook and tweeter communication platforms are among the effective tools for social communication and business related information sharing. While their contribution to communication is profound, the differences between the two platforms are based on their strengths to connect people. For instance, while Facebook is more complex than the tweeter, it provides official platforms for communications. On the other hand, tweeters ability to have 4 Facebook Vs Twitter high-speed intensity in their tweets, information spreads across the world faster and effectively. Each platform plays its own strengths to provide the best information dissemination and social interactive strategy. 5 Facebook Vs Twitter References Global time spent on social media daily 2017. Quote Sandwich Example Argument: Opponent of social media because it makes people lazy Social media is an important issue to discuss because it is so widespread across the people of the world. “Three billion people, around 40% of the world’s population, use online social media – and we’re spending an average of two hours every day sharing, liking, tweeting and updating on these platforms” (Brown, 2018). Two hours every day is a huge amount of time that social media users could use by doing something more productive. This statistic suggests that the world’s population is becoming lazier because people are spending more time on their computers or cell phones and less time interacting face to face, working, or being active. Quote Sandwich Example  Argument: Opposing social media because it makes people stressed.  Quote: “Twitter was found to be a “significant contributor” because it increased their awareness of other people’s stress” (Brown, 2018). Quote Sandwich Example Argument: Opponent of social media because it makes people stressed. A survey of 1,800 people was conducted in Washington D.C. in 2015 to find out whether social media causes stress. The researchers found that, “Twitter was found to be a “significant contributor” because it increased their awareness of other people’s stress” (Brown, 2018). Because many people talk about their stress on social media, it can cause others to become more stressed as well. Social media creates an environment where everyone else’s problems, stress, and anxiety can grow into much bigger issues than how they began. Quote Sandwich Example  Argument: Social media is a great platform for businesses and charities.  Quote: “One of the benefits of marketing through social media, especially where charities are concerned, is that consumers and supporters worldwide can contribute. Making a contribution online can be done from anywhere in the world. Gaining global attention for a cause or major product release creates a buzz and draws attention to the original poster, in a positive manner” (Agrawal, 2016).  Paraphrase: Social media can be good for businesses and charities because advertisements can be spread worldwide, making it easier for anyone in the world to buy products or contribute to a charity (Agrawal, 2016). Quote Sandwich Example Argument: Social media is a great platform for businesses and charities. Nowadays, many businesses and organizations have social media pages to advertise their products, events, and brands. Social media can be good for businesses and charities because advertisements can be spread worldwide, making it easier for anyone in the world to buy products or contribute to a charity (Agrawal, 2016). Even if a charity’s location is in South America, social media makes it possible for their advertisements to reach countries all over the world. Businesses are also able to advertise their products so that if anyone wants to buy a product that is made in another country, all they have to do is click online.
