Structural Oppression Analysis Paper
Choose TWO of the examples below and analyze how systems of oppression (racism, sexism,
heterosexism/transphobia, and/or sexism are operating under the surface to create the
situation. How do the systems of oppression create cycles of advantages for some and
disadvantages for others?
Write a 3-5 page paper, typed and double spaced. Draw on THREE readings from class and/or
class discussions to support your analysis.
I will be grading based on:
• Depth of analysis;
• A clear understanding of oppression as a system, privilege, and micro/cumulative
oppressions;
• The ability to apply concepts we are studying to issues/examples.
• The ability to integrate readings and course concepts to support your analysis.
• Grammar, writing, citations.
Due to the D2L dropbox by November 2 at 11:30 pm.
1. Analyze the power dynamics in the recent Brett Kavanaugh/Dr. Christine Blaisey Ford
hearings. Be sure to address at least FOUR of the following issues: male privilege, patriarchy,
toxic masculinity , constructions of femininity, rape culture, white privilege and racism, and/or
“old boys club.”
2. The U.S Supreme Court recently upheld a voter restriction ruling that limited voting rights
that in North Dakota to those who hold a permanent, physical address. That effectively
disenfranchises Native Americans in the state, many of whom hold P.O.boxes and thus would
not be able to vote under this ruling. In your response, be sure to address: colonization and
neocolonialism, racism, classism/class privilege, and the voice/needs of diverse communities.

story, is caught in a cycle of poverty and slavery. Be sure to address the following concepts:

4. Hypothetical Scenario:
Chukwunyere is from a wealthy family in Nigeria. He has done well in school there and has
travelled to the United States to pursue his undergraduate studies in Computer Science. From
the moment he landed in Minnesota, he has become aware that many people see him as an
outsider. He has been called “Black” or “African American;” though those are not the racial
categories he identifies with because they are not the operative ones back in Nigeria. He hadn’t
experienced racism until he got here. Weirdly, people also consider him an “outsider” as soon
as they hear his accent, and they often compliment him on his “good English.” He can barely
find work here in the U.S. because of the visa restrictions on where international students can
work, and he is concerned that he will have more difficulty finding an internship than his
American classmates.
As you analyze the issues at work here, be sure to address micro/cumulative aggressions,
racism, and xenophobia.
