Description

Please respond to the following post, with your opinion add citations and reference if need it.

The concept of health has evolved overtime and continues to show changes. In order for progress to occur we must stay up to date and also be innovative. In the 19thcentury being healthy was only thought of as having no diseases. Diseases spread rapidly then, due to the lack of good sanitation, hygiene, and overcrowding. In the 20thcentury disease prevention became top priority and with the invention of vaccines many diseases were cured. (Health Promotion: Health & Wellness Across the Continuum, 2018)

As times have changed, there has been a shift in the focus of health also to include wellness, illness and overall well-being. The World Health Organization was formed in 1948 with is focus then and now still being to promote health across the world to all populations. The definition of health now isn’t only physical but also includes mental and spiritual health. Health promotion and prevention are now major focus. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion created the Healthy People Program back in 1979. Now we have the Healthy People 2020, which “identifies the nation’s current health concern priorities and has formulated action plans to attain varying goals related to these issues” (Health Promotion: Health & Wellness Across the Continuum, 2018). It is important for nurses to stay up to date so that we may deliver the best most efficient care to our patient based on what current research is showing. Applying interventions based on evidence-based practice allows us to continue to move forward by leaving behind practices that are no longer shown to be effective and allowing us to provide high quality, safe patient care.

What do you do to stay up to date on evidence-based practice and contribute to the health promotion of our patients? Do you belong to any associations or organizations that help you stay informed with the changing times?
