Grand Canyon University UDL Guidelines Presentation
Differentiating instruction to meet the needs of all students in the classroom should be part of every teacher’s instructional strategy. There are many techniques that can be used to modify instruction and accommodate for students’ needs, and knowledge about evidence-based practices for doing so should be used when making decisions about instruction. The use of Response to Intervention (RTI) programs and a multitier system of support (MTSS) to establish programs that meet the varied needs of students in one setting are commonly used strategies for differentiation. Additionally, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework to guide these types of evidence-based instructional deliveries and practices. Data from tiered support systems such as RTI and MTSS can be used to steer the UDL framework.Imagine that you have been asked to create an informational digital presentation about Universal Design for Learning approaches that can be used by special education and general education teachers in the grade levels associated with your field of study. Refer to “The UDL Guidelines,” the topic materials, and your research to create an 8-10 slide digital presentation that addresses the following: Explain how applying UDL principles in the educational setting can address the needs of all students, including students with disabilities.Describe the UDL guidelines of engagement, representation, action, and expression.Describe three specific, evidence-based UDL instructional approaches or adaptations that teachers could utilize to enhance the success and promote the growth and development of students with and without disabilities.Discuss how UDL and the use of evidence-based strategies can influence and be used to improve professional practice and student outcomes. Provide specific examples to illustrate your ideas.Provide links to five additional resources related to UDL statistics and approaches and describe how each would be beneficial to teachers as they implement the UDL framework.Title slide, reference slide, and presenter's notes.Support your presentation with a minimum of three scholarly resources.Refer to "Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations," located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style. While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success enter. This assignment uses a rubric. classmates’ responses done.Communication and group dynamics are important elements within the leading facet of the P-O-L-C framework. Read the following article from CNN describing Bernie Ebbers' downfall as CEO of WorldCom: Ex-WorldCom CEO Ebbers guilty. https://money.cnn.com/2005/03/15/news/newsmakers/ebbers/Based on what you read in the article, in your initial post, identify which two barriers to effective communication were most prominent within WorldCom and explain how these barriers led to the downfall of the company. Be specific and identify the communication barriers based on the information in Chapter 11 of your text.In responding to your peers, comment on whether you believe the concept of groupthink may have played a part in the downfall of WorldCom, especially as it pertains to its board. How you would overcome the communication barriers and groupthink to ensure organizational success? My first response needed for classmate.Benjamin Johnson posted Jun 14, 2020 3:09 PMEx-CEO Bernard Ebbers was involved in many communication barriers that eventually bankrupted WorldCom. One tactic that he used was selective perception which is “filtering out information to suit our own needs”. (Carpenter, 2011, p281) Most of Mr. Ebbers wealth was in WorldCom Stock thus he filtered out reports on declining sales in telecom services and equipment. (Crawford, 2005) This Filtering of communication on sales painted the picture to the rest of the company that they have been doing well. Filtering occurred when Mr. Ebbers refused to release information about the declining sales. If he decided to not to filter the information it could invoke outrage for the potential unethical or illegal activity occurring. Again, he was worried about his personal wealth and made decisions for his personal gain instead of proper decision for the company’s health. Using nonverbal communication to avoid leaving evidence to the crime being committed along with putting personal stakes ahead of the needs of the company led to the bankruptcy of WorldCom.ReferencesCarpenter, M. A., & Bauer, T. (2011). Principles of management (2nd ed.). Ingram.Crawford, K. (2005, March 15). Ex-worldcom CEO Ebbers found guilty on all counts - Mar. 15, 2005. Retrieved from https://money.cnn.com/2005/03/15/news/newsmakers/ebbers/2nd response needed for classmate7-1 Discussion: WorldCom: What Happened?Janet Cahoon posted Jun 15, 2020 4:25 PMHello Class, I will start this discussion off by paraphrasing corruption, a form of dishonesty undertaken by a person or organization entrusted with a position of authority, to acquire illicit benefit or abuse power for ones on private gain (Wikipedia, n.d.). Shuffling the books by manipulating financial data falls into this category. WorldCom attempted to falsely inflate the earnings on its profit and loss statements by nearly four billion (Kennon, J. 2020). The CEO Bernard Ebbers and the CFO Scott Sullivan acted in an unethical manner, which ultimately ruined the life savings of thousands of investors. Businesses should institute a system of checks and balances to prevent and detect fraud. Any CEO must have a clear understanding of company plans and goals. At the company I work for, we have internal and external audits during the year. The internal review usually focuses on business practices and risks, while the outside audit firm goes over our financial records. WorldCom's first barrier in communication, in this case, was filtering, "the distortion or withholding of information to manage a person's reactions" (Carpenter, M., 2013). This communication barrier prevents getting a clear picture of what is occurring. In Mr. Ebbers's case, he was one of the masterminds behind the accounting scandal that ended up bankrupting the company. Scott Sullivan testified that on one occasion in 2000, Mr. Ebbers advised Sullivan to book improper account entries to increase revenue and obscure costs (Teather, D. 2005). Sullivan advised there were two sets of books, one reflecting the accurate financial status and the second one for wall Street. Ebber's knowingly misrepresented the actual financial state of the company, which led Wall Street and investors to believe the company was financially sound. The second communication barrier was selective perceptions, which refers to filtering information to suit our own needs (Carpenter, M., 2013). After reading the article and others like it, I believe Mr. Ebbers was fully aware of Mr. Sullivan's actions in the mishandling of the books. He felt that since he was not performing the steps, then he would not be criminally responsible for the outcome. Mr. Ebbers filtered his knowledge of the accounting scam without concern for anyone outside of himself (Crawford, 2005). The direct benefits that Mr. Ebbers received in WorldCom stock and four hundred million in loans allowed for the mismanagement to grow into an eleven billion-dollar accounting fraud (Crawford, 2005). Mr. Ebbers resigned just before the scandal went public; his exit left the appearance that the company was stable, which he used in his defense that he was utterly unaware (Crawford, 2005). In the end, Mr. Ebbers claims that "letting much of the minutiae of running the company to underlings" (Crawford, 2005) was just part of his attempt to deflect attention from his involvement. Indeed he was running a busy company, but a CEO is at the helm; managing and overseeing roles is his charge. His defense of not knowing what was going on is just one of the many communication breakdowns that lead to the companies failure.ReferenceCarpenter, M. (November 2013).
