Running head: RESEARCHING CULTURAL CHALLENGES Researching Cultural Challenges Staci Barfield GU299 General Education Professor Sherri Trice October 29, 2018 1 RESEARCHING CULTURAL CHALLENGES 2 Researching Cultural Challenges Introduction The boys and girls club of America is one of the many nongovernmental organizations that seek to change the lives of the American people. The organization is committed to changing the lives of the youths by taking part in community projects meant to change the lives of the youths (Arbreton, 2009). Their mission is to, therefore, enable all young people in American society to reach their full potential. This is done in partnership with other organizations who wish to play a corporate social responsibility that would see the lives of the youths change for the better. Humanitarian considerations The youths are one of the most vulnerable populations in American society. One of the greatest challenges they face is unemployment and the drug menace as well (Cress, Collier, & Reitenauer, 2013). This has led to most of them turning into crime which in the end leads them to a future full of misery as a result of incarceration and death at worst. In the realization of the challenges faced by the youths, the boys and girls club of America engages in charity works aimed at redeeming the future of the youths. This includes sponsoring the education of the most vulnerable youngsters that they may grow up to become responsible persons in the future. However, there is the need to actively involve the youths especially those in the streets in a bid to understand their challenges further and figure out ways in which they could better be resolved. Cultural challenges Students engaging in the service-learning and community partnerships are set to be faced by some challenges with cultural differences being one of them. On the one hand, they are RESEARCHING CULTURAL CHALLENGES 3 uncertain of how they are to deal with the youths they meet in the community. This is triggered by the difference in their social backgrounds and the issue of class. This may lead to some of the students shying away from the program due to the fear of the unknown. Burke Brown, (2015) views communication as a great challenge as the youths in the society use the street dialect while students could be used to the use of formal communication hence a communication barrier is formed as a result. Roadblocks XYZ University has to brace themselves for the issues to be resolved before sending their students on the program. As much as boys and girls club of America has had no issues in the past, it is expected that the students would be at risk when dealing with the said group of persons. Violence is one of the issues that would face the students when meeting the youths especially those engaging in crime and drug abuse (O'Grady, 2014). Their reaction would be unpredictable hence the need to take caution before the same is implemented. Conclusion Cultural conflicts due to differences in the educational level of the persons the students would be engaging in pose a threat to the students taking part in service learning. To resolve these issues, there is the need to take the students on an orientation program before they embark on the process. This would go a long way in helping the students understand the kind of people they are going to meet while on the other hand enable them to look for ways to resolve the same issues. The university and the organization should, therefore, consider strategizing for intervention measures before sending the students on such an expedition. This is to avoid the RESEARCHING CULTURAL CHALLENGES liability costs that the institution would have to meet in case one of their students found themselves in risky situations. 4 RESEARCHING CULTURAL CHALLENGES 5 References Arbreton, A. Analyzing an Organization for Service learning
Introduction
As a consultant for XYZ University, I chose the Fundacion Capital as a perfect choice for
service learning. The organization targets to reach people in different parts of the world who are
not banked (Eisenberg, 2015). This group of people usually has little, if any, access to various
financial services. These people lack financial advisers and end up using money inappropriately.
By doing this, they make little progress in life. Once the organization gets to these people, it
widens their knowledge on how to handle finances as well as how to invest. Students can a lot
from the organization. For instance, the since the organization helps the members community to
