Global management offers a unique opportunity for an individual(s) to grow both
personally and professionally. However, such a position requires skills, training and a perfect
understanding of the dynamic environments that these firms operate in. Throughout this
semester, I have had the opportunity to learn these special skills through a combination of
lectures and self-assessment tests. These tests have enabled me to have a clear picture of what
my current capabilities are, helped me identify areas I need to improve and decide on the best
methods that I can use to improve myself. Therefore, in this paper, I will discuss these key
concepts, the impact they have had on my professional development and the measures I will put
in place to help me become a global manager.
The self-assessment tests in the semester provide a reflective question and answer session
that assesses key cultural elements present across nations. These elements are not only essential
for managerial practice but also social interaction when operating within new cultural contexts.
The key concepts that were covered and that I found interesting were; Humane Orientation,
performance orientation, Gender Egalitarianism, Institutional collectivism, in group collectivism
and uncertainty avoidance. Although these concepts any individual pursuing global management,
they are just a fraction of what is needed to perform efficiently.
Humane orientation basically entails sensitivity to other people. Although most of the
modern world is following a capitalist philosophy, we still possess a deeply entrenched need to
be altruistic to other persons. This notion is particularly important in global management as most
of the activities involve interaction with people from different cultures and with different levels
