Speaker 1: Drug abuse is when one uses legal or illegal substances in ways they shouldn’t. The user might take more than the regular dose of pills or use someone else’s prescription. They may abuse drugs to feel good, ease stress, or avoid reality. It is the use of drugs in a way that influences or alters the workings of the mind; affect moods, emotions, feelings, and thinking processes. I have seen many people in my life who were close friends or relatives getting lost in drug abuse or addiction. When it was a relative, we had to use a lot of resources just to help him get better. Speaker 2: (interrupting the first speaker) I certainly agree with your claim, drug abuse and addictions affect both the user and the people around them because he must be cared for. Additionally, some addictions just don’t wear off easily; they take a lot of treatment, therapy, time, as well as financial resources. Speaker 3: It seems from what you guys are saying is that drug abuse and addiction not only has a mental health dimension but also an economic dimension. Dr. Homer: In my line of work, I have come across families that have been torn apart by addiction. I am talking about addiction affecting grandparents to their grandchildren. Think about the economic effect this would have on the family members from such a family. It is a life time of anguish and poverty because these people will use all their resources in seeking treatment for their substance addiction. Personally, I sympathize with addicts because I know this is more of a mental health issue. You know, traditionally, people used to think others were using drugs because they were just bad behaved or were brought up the wrong way. I can tell you, as an expert in this area that that is wrong way to look at the issue of drug abuse. Speaker 1: I certainly agree with you Dr. Homer as a society we need to change how we deal with substance abuse and addictions issue. Do you think that the members of the society, the government, social workers, mental health experts, and behaviorists can come together to solve this problem? Dr. Homer: I certainly do think that this is a multi-stakeholder approach issue. The model you just highlighted a while ago is actually something that we, in the field of mental health, have felt for a long time could be necessary to solve the problem of addiction. Speaker 1: Okay, what about personal responsibility for everyone. I think as adults we have knowledge about consequences of what we do. Therefore, I would argue that everyone must be responsible for their own problems. Speaker 2: There is no doubt that most of the drug users and addicted people are grown up with the ability to understand what is right or wrong. However, I think there are some people DRUG ABUSE 3 who cannot just resist the urge. These people may be predisposed biologically or otherwise to substance abuse or addiction coz you will find them using any type of drug be it painkillers, stimulants, Opioids among others. I think at some point this becomes a national issue and everyone’s problem because they not only pose an economic problem to our society but also a safety and health problem. Think of it this way. If the users increase, a dealer moves into your neighborhood. Suddenly, crime rate goes up. Additionally, disease incidence increases too. To top it all up the economy drops because people are unproductive. Speaker 1: I think the problem runs deeper than one may be tempted to think. How about we jail all the users of drugs, as well as the dealers, pushers, and peddlers? I think that would solve the problem. Dr. Homer: I think that is a simplistic solution to a very complex problem of drug abuse. The multi-stakeholder model mentioned above still remains to me the best solution because it will deal with the problem at the societal level. Criminalizing a mental problem does not help solve the problem because locking up a drug user does not treat him either. I propose that a multi stakeholder approach remains the best shot to solving this predicament. Well Gentlemen, once again I am glad that we had a good discussion of drug and substance abuse. We are in agreement that this is a problem that affects the whole society. Dr. Homer, we are all thankful for gracing this small occasion and sharing with us your informed views regarding substance abuse and addiction. We look forward to hosting you again on issues to do with mental health. Thank you. Dr. Homer: I was thrilled to discuss such an important issue with young minds like you guys. Never hesitate to call me on issues to do with mental research. Colleagues, thank you for assisting in this discussion. Your arguments and points brought life and diversity to this hot issue. I look forward to doing this with you often. Speaker 2: Thank you, I hope we do this again soon. Speaker 3: This was quite an informative session. See you guys again soon.
