Causes and Effects of Civil Rights Movements
The Civil Right Movement was a movement that pushed for the rights of African
Americans in the United States of America in the years 1950’s to late 1960’s. During this time,
African Americans were victims of racism and their rights were infringed in many ways. The
movement carried out its activities through non-violent protests and rallies (Rollason, pg 18). Do
you think the actions of this movement were justified and did they bear any fruits? African
Americans of that time did not enjoy civil rights such as voting like any other American enjoyed.
It was also against the unconstitutional and extra-judicial killings that were perpetrated by the
American government of that time. This paper looks in depth the causes behind the formation of
this movement with the main one being racial segregation and the effects and results the
movement was able to bore and achieve and if it accomplished its man purposes of equality for
all races in America.
One of the causes that led to the formation of the movement was racial segregation.
Racism was very imminent in America at that time. There were separate schools for blacks and
whites, separate hospital and even separate social places. African Americans, the blacks were
regarded as lesser human beings that the whites did not want to associate themselves with. This
was very demeaning to the Africans and hindered their progress in life and opportunities in the

cooperate world as well as in the government. In courts, African Americans were not accorded
fair hearing and would sometimes be charged without trial and would not stand a chance to fair
trial especially if they have a case against a white.
Another cause for the formation of the Civil Right Movement was the denial of the right
to vote. African Americans were not allowed to vote despite forming a huge number of the
American population. This consequently meant that the blacks would not be properly represented
in the House of Representatives and in the government. This is well brought out in the movie
Selma where Annie Lee Cooper is prevented from registering as a voter by a white registrar.
King then to tries to reach the president, Lyndon. B Johnson who gives a blind eye to the
sentiments and tells King that he understands those are important concerns he has raised but
there were more important projects that he had to do (DuVernay, Webb & Young). This shows
how African Americans were demeaned to the level that they did not have a place in national
matters despite being a part of that nation.
Use of terror to exhibit domination and superiority by White Americans over Black
American was a...
