Survey Research and Data Collection
Research methods that are quantitative are focused on assessing the criminal justice or
criminology aspects. As such, to fully understand the dynamics of the process it is essential to
take into account the various terms. Concepts in this regard are abstract and defining variables
(Maxfield, & Babbie, 2014). Therefore, studying the variables is undertaken in a bid to
determine the relation therein, cause and effect as well as the covariation. It is essential to note
that variables may either be dependent or independent. The dependent variable also commonly
defined as the outcome variable is the focus of the research whilst the independent variable or
predictor variable is the variable used in determining, causing or preceding the dependent
variable.
Research methods with quantitative attributes include; survey research, cross-sectional
research, experimental and quasi-experimental research, time series research, longitudinal
research, and meta-analysis. Survey research is depicted by the observations implored in the field
of social sciences including and not limited to criminology. Thus, survey research includes the
collection of data from a group of people and depicting their results through the use of
questionnaires. Survey research may be undertaken through the use of computers, telephones,
mails or in person (Jrank, n.d). Surveys may include a series of open-ended as well as closeended questions. The questions referred toast h open-ended are relied upon in a bid to draw in
information from the respondent on answers to particular queries while the questions that are
close-ended provide the respondent with choices upon which the respondent may enlist their
choice. Surveys, therefore, are viable as they are efficient, less costly, versatile, and the
information may be generalized.
