Introduction
The road to American independence began with the French Indian wars fought between
1754 and 1763. Britain considered itself an ally to the colonists and contributed military and
financial support to help win the war but decided that settling 10,000 troops in America was a
better way to get repaid for the immense help it provided in winning the war. However, the
visitor began making demands on the host beginning with the enforcement of the Sugar Act of
1764 followed by the infamous Stamp Act in 1765 before taxing tea, paint, glass, and paper
through the Townshend Acts of 1767 (Passant, 2017). American had had enough by then, and the
main reason was that paying these taxes meant that they agreed to be taxed without having a say
in it. They had been led by democratically elected representatives for a long time and were not
ready to adhere to policies that did not further their interests. When the famous Boston Massacre,
where five people were killed and several injured after a riot against British soldiers occupying
America, occurred it was clear that something had to give (Allison, 2011). The importance of
looking back at history is that it gives us a deeper understanding of the underlying causes of
events at particular points in time. The events leading up to the revolutionary war and the
declaration of independence are the genesis of the establishment of the American nation as we
know it. This paper will examine the various problems that the young nation experienced, how
they were solved and whether they threatened the stability of the nation in a way that might have
resulted in its failure.
