Introduction

The term “depression” is used to characterize feelings of being hopeless, sad,
discouraged, unmotivated, and irritable and the overall lack of pleasure or interest in life. The
DSM-5 indicates that the difference between normal sadness and depression does not lie in the
degree to which an individual feels sad but in a mixture of other factors related to the period of
these negative feelings, bodily impact, other symptoms, and an effect upon a person’s capability
to carry out daily activities (Egeberg, Hansen, Gislason & Thyssen, 2016). The DSM-5 outlines
that a person must be experiencing at least a depressive mood or a loss of pleasure or interest for
two weeks for a diagnosis of the depression to be made. As of 2016, depression was the most
common form and symptom of mental illness in the U.S. 7.4% of the adults was reported to be
affected by depression (Mata et al., 2015). This paper elaborates the elements included in the
concept map for depression. These elements include signs and symptoms, risk factor, effects, cooccurring disorders, and the prevention of depression.
Signs and Symptoms
Even though there are different types of depression, all of them have the same
recognizable symptoms. During episodes of depression, a person losses interests in normal life
activities such as sports or hobbies (Egeberg, Hansen, Gislason & Thyssen, 2016). Other
symptoms include excessive sleeping or insomnia, prolonged feelings of unhappiness, changes in
appetite, reduced sex drive in couples, anxiety, angry outburst and frustrations over small
matters. In young children and adolescents, signs and symptoms include hopelessness, anxiety,
and avoidance of social interactions (Fried & Nesse, 2015). Changes in sleeping pattern and
thinking is also a sign of depression in children and teens. In older adults, depression may have
fewer manifestations as they may be dissatisfied and bored with life. These symptoms may go

undiagnosed because of the loss of appetite, and reduced sex drive may be associated with other
illnesses. Suicidal thinking in this age group is a serious sign of depression that needs diagnosis.
This is a common occurrence in older men, and they are at the highest risk of suicide.
Signs and symptoms of depression also manifest in physical forms. Fatigue and low
energy levels are common symptoms of depression. It is commonly believed that exhaustion
comes from stress, but depression is also a common cause of fatigue. Fatigue related to
depression cause feelings of apathy and irritability and lack of concentration (Fried & Nesse,
2015: Martin, Neighbors & Griffith, 2013). Emotional issues associated with depression also
lead to chronic aches and pains due to the inflammatory responses of the body that may interfere
with the brain signals. Anot...
