Description

Prior to beginning work on this assignment, read the University of Guelph Library’s resource Using a Scientific Journal Article to Write a Critical Review (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and watch the Final Paper video to understand how to successfully complete this assignment.

Reading and critically analyzing academic research in journal articles is an important part of learning and applying scholarly research for multiple applications within your discipline. The first four weeks of this course discussed the various components of research design. Your final assignment is an academic research-article critique. The purpose of this critique is to ensure that you know how to read and critically assess research for use in your own research, understand social problems in society, support decision making in public policy, or to influence one’s own individual research.

For this final assignment, read and critically review one of the journal articles listed below:

Next, apply the methods detailed in Using a Scientific Journal Article to Write a Critical Review (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to critique the article you selected. At a minimum, the critique should include the following information:

  • Introduction (about two pages): Summarize the article you chose, including the purpose of the study, the methodology utilized, the results obtained, and the conclusions drawn by the author(s) utilizing questions posed in the reading. Utilize questions posed in the “Analyze the Text” section of Using a Scientific Journal Article to Write a Critical Review (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to develop this section.
  • Body (about five pages): Highlight the quality of the research article (both the strengths and weaknesses) as expressed through each section of the paper (i.e., introduction, methods, results, discussion, overview). Use questions posed in the “Evaluate the Text” section of “Using a Scientific Journal Article to Write a Critical Review (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.” to develop this section. Follow the “Evaluate the Text” prompts and include the following:
    • Critique whether the researcher used the appropriate and ethical application of research methods in relation to their research goals.
    • Assess whether the application of quantitative methods approaches, qualitative methods approaches or a combination (mixed methods) was appropriate in the article research.
    • Interpret data and empirical findings in the research through an assessment of the strengths and weaknesses.
    • Examine the role of the research design in the article by defending or critiquing the research method based on your assessment.
    • Support the impact of the research by determining if it benefits social policy, theoretical knowledge, or both.

The Academic Research-Article Critique paper

  • Must be 10 double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center’s APA Style (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.
  • Must include a separate title page with the following:
    • Title of paper
    • Student’s name
    • Course name and number
    • Instructor’s name
    • Date submitted

For further assistance with the formatting and the title page, refer to APA Formatting for Word 2013 (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..

Introduction
Background
In the year 2005, during the last week of August, hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast of
the United States affecting several states. The hurricane was so strong that it caused damages
along the southern part of the United States. It affected all areas from Texas to the coast of
Florida. Financially, it is the most expensive hurricane to ever occur in the United States causing
damages worth more than 125 billion dollars and the deadliest of all hurricanes since 1928.
The hurricane origin was the Bahamas after a tropical wave emerged with a short-lived
cyclone. The short-lived cyclone was called a Tropical Depression Ten. The cyclone had
originated from a tropical wave that was created on the coast of West Africa. The short-lived
tropical depression became a tropical storm and started heading towards the United States on the
coast of Florida. It was a tropical storm until two hours before t reached Florida that it turned to a
hurricane (Koontz & Hinderliter, 2018).
The hurricane lasted for one week and caused a lot of damage and losses. It first hit
Florida’s Aventura and Hallandale beaches two days after the tropical storm had formed in the
Atlantic Ocean. It weakened and progressed westward towards the Gulf of Mexico where it
intensified to category 5 and weakened again to category 3 when it passed over Mississippi and
Louisiana.
The damages as a result of the hurricane included the beaches and the areas surrounding
the beaches in the states between Florida and Texas. Casino barges and boats rammed into
buildings as water pushed them inward. More than 1800 people died as a result of the hurricane
and subsequent floods. The states of Mississippi and Louisiana built surge protectors along some

of their beaches to guard against such floods. However, these surge protectors were the causes of
a majority of the deaths (Koontz & Hinderliter, 2018).
Purpose of the Study
In the unfortunate event that a natural disaster like a hurricane occurs, the first people to
be called in are the first responders of the police departments concerned. If the police are
overpowered by the disaster then other special groups start to come in. The police, who were the
first people to be called, do not go home when the specialized groups are called in but continue
to help the victims.
The victims of the disaster are usually the worst affected because they experienced the
disaster and its effects firsthand. The police, especially the first responders, are usually the first
ones to arrive and as such, they too experience the effects of the disaster. If they are early enough
then they may experience the disaster itself. The depression as a result of the disaster always
affects the victims and the police alike. In this paper, I critically review Erin et al. (2018).
The researchers of the article that I am critically reviewing carried out a survey to
determine how the police that helped during hurricane Katrina in 2005 were affected. The
researcher sort to establish the effects of such things like gratitude, resilience, social support, and
satisfaction with life from depression symptoms due to police officers. The police officers were
the only people who helped during the hurricane.
The area between Florida and Texas were affected by the hurricane with some areas such
as Mississippi, Louisiana and New Orleans being affected more than other areas. The police
officers in the areas like New Orleans that were most affected are the ones that suffered the
greatest depression after the hurricane had subsided. This is because these officers experienced
the greatest effects and saw the most deaths of the civilians that they were supposed to rescue...
