Comparison of Lacewings and butterflies
Introduction
Butterflies and lacewings are too similar that one can be mistaken for the other. However
biologically they are different. Lacewings are similar to butterfly though the lacewings are not
ancestral of the butterfly. A butterfly is made up of three parts of the body namely head thorax
and the abdomen while the lacewing is characterized by a complex network of wings veins that
give them a lacy appearance. Butterflies play a very important role in the web of life by being a
primary food source for some wasps and flies, whose tiny larvae hatch within the butterfly eggs
and they feed on their host. Lacewings do feed on pollen, nectar, and honeydew supplemented
with mites’ aphids and other small arthropods. In most cases, lacewings act as predators while
the butterfly does act like prey. Butterflies are able to survive in their environments by changing
their colors depending on the situation that they exist in a particular stage of development or
time. The lacewing is green or yellow in color which corresponds to their habitats which are in
aquatic areas hence they are able to hide from both their preys and predators. Butterflies are very
active during the day and pollinates a variety of wildflowers but are less efficient than bees in
moving pollen between plants because they do not have specialized structure of collecting it
while the lacewings are a good pollinator of plants and are able to conveniently transport pollen
grains as well as elimination of destructive insects in plants since they are predators. Every insect
has their own features that help in their survival in different environments (Insects Editorial
Office, 2014).
