Description

This assignment is based on your reading. https://mashable.com/2017/06/28/pretty-little-liars-twitter-showrunner-social-media-tv/#9GTbTBh5Jiqt

After reading the article, you will do two things:

Step 1

Write a 2-paragraph post in which you explain one point made in the article (either by the author or one of the interviewees), and use a new example to illustrate your point. This example has to be a specific example from narrative or reality TV that has happened during this calendar year - 2018. Sports and awards shows do not count for the purpose of this assignment.

Make sure your response is well-written, uses proper paragraph structure, and has no typos. You do not have to cite your sources.

Step 2

Write a one-paragraph response to one of your classmate's posts(in the files). This response needs to engage with what was said. "This is very interesting" is not an acceptable response.

NOTE: No more than TWO students can use the same program as their example.

One point made in the article is about how fans’ feelings of ownership of a show make them feel like they should have a say in the show’s plot or characters. According to the article, fans sometimes feel like they have ownership of a show because they are the reason for a show’s success; without fans to watch a show, there is no show to watch. Fans often want a show’s plot to go a particular way, or for the creators of the show to listen to fan theories and make them a reality for the show, but many television creators simply do not want fans’ opinions via social media to affect their writing and ultimately refuse to listen to fans. An example of this is from the television show Supernatural. Although Supernatural was mentioned in the article as an example of community, the SPNFamily is just as notable for their feelings of ownership of the plotline. There have been many notable instances of this in Supernatural’s 14 season history. Creators and writers of the CW show have been accused of queerbaiting fans since season 4 because of the fan-created relationship Destiel. The show has also been accused of sexism and racism because the show has a nasty habit of killing off the only female, non-white, and queer characters on the show, leaving only straight white male characters. Fans of the show have commonly expressed outrage of this because they feel underrepresented and offended by the show’s choices and have demanded change due to their feelings of ownership. It has taken many years for Supernatural writers to address these concerns. Most recently, in 2018 they attempted a spinoff show called Wayward Sisters featuring not only an all-female cast but also a few of these females were POC and queer. However, even though this was a major step forward with the Supernatural creators, the show only received a pilot, where they chose to kill a queer woman of color, and Wayward Sisters did not end up being put on by the CW. It turns out that Supernatural creators didn’t want to listen to the fans’ concerns and ownership ideas after all. Community without a doubt has been the most present when it comes to how fans relate to the shows and all that fans do in order to keep their favorite shows running. As illustrated in the reading community is best described as fans using the show to connect to each other and to form relationships with people, as well as fans going as far to support organizations together via raising money for a charity. Community is what connects the fans to the shows that they care about and what makes them feel like they can relate to what the characters are experiencing, and how they are not alone. Not only does community provide a connection for the audience to the characters but it also can go as far as saving shows from cancellation. In the summer of 2018 it was announced that a widely popular show called Brooklyn Nine-Nine was to be cancelled. Within days fans took twitter by storm and called out the network for cancelling the show. After the uproar it was announced that the show would come back on a different network for another season. This interaction shows how dedicated fans are to the shows they watch and how they take every action that the network makes personally. Without fans being so passionate about Brooklyn Nine-Nine and without the show having a strong community of viewers the show would have been cancelled without any hope of returning. Community in this case involved fans uniting as one and showing the networks that if the show was to be brought back that it would be successful. Therefore making the use of community a huge resource for shows to see that community goes beyond fans live- tweeting the show as it airs and that it can actually impact the shows future.
