Read John 1-4 and 11-16 and grapple with the following questions: Why does John believe Jesus came to earth? According to John, how does one come to believe and have faith in Jesus? What does John believe one's response should be to Jesus? According to John, what is the function and role of Jesus? Offer 2-3 examples from your reading to address these questions. 2. As you read, take note of how and where the themes are evident. 3. Go to the library to research the contextual and cultural background of the texts as it pertains to your question. You must cite one of the following Bible background reference books (sometimes called commentaries in title but not to be confused with specific book(s) commentaries, rather Bible Background is the key word in title) for your paper: The IVP Bible Background Commentary The Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary Dictionary of the New Testament Background (for New Testament papers) 3. Go to the library and read two different specific commentaries on the book you are researching, from a specific book (s) commentary on the reference shelf of the library. Do NOT use any online resources as commentaries unless they are e-books of books on the reference shelves of the library. 5. There are “Additional Reference Sources,” which are Bible dictionaries. Bible dictionaries can provide good beginning background information for your own research. You may cite these Bible Dictionaries only if you are using them as the fourth or more source for your research. They cannot be included in the three required sources listed above. 5. Write a three-page paper that includes the following: a. Introduction Paragraph: Briefly introduce the theme you are about to discuss. End with a clear thesis statement outlining the evidence you will offer readers to understand your point. b. Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph in the body should be dedicated to a separate illustration that proves the point you are making in your thesis statement. In the body, you will be expected to cite three secondary sources, including a Bible backgrounds source, as well as two book commentaries, summing up the research from each source in your own words, and citing the source with MLA standardized formatting. c. Concluding Reflection: End your RC with a brief personal reflection paragraph discussing how this theme relates to your life. Formatting: (Note: incorrect formatting will reduce your grade) 1. Each three-page RC should have a cover page with your name on it, be typed in 12 pt Times New Roman font, double spaced, have 1 inch margins all around the document. 2. MLA is required. GO TO https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/02/ for a tutorial on the proper use of MLA formatting in both your reading commentary papers and prophet reports. This site is also embedded into the library Research Guide for this class under the tab “Citing Your Resources.” 3. Add a Works Cited page to the end of your paper, not a Bibliography. Do not put any sources on your Works Cited you have not cited within the paper. Do not put the Bible in your Works Cited page as it is not a research source, but the text of the paper. (It is most likely that you will need to cite one of the required Bible backgrounds reference books in the text of your paper, but if you do not need to, please add an Addendum to the Works Cited stating which Bible background book you read for your research.) 4. Here are a few reminders to avoid common MLA mistakes. (1) Put the ending period of the sentence following the parenthetical citation. Example: ...cleanliness or purity to holiness (Walton 184). (2) If the author’s name is mentioned in the sentence, such as “According to Walton......” then only the page number is put inside the parenthesis: (184). If the author’s name is not mentioned in the sentence, then use this format: (Walton 184). Note there is no comma between authors name and page number! (3) If the author has more than one title on your Works Cited page, you must then indicate the title of the source: (Genesis 184). In the case you have not used the author’s name in the sentence, you do use a comma between the author and the name of the book: (Walton, Genesis184). 6. Bible quotations: Cite the biblical reference if you refer to a passage in a sentence, not only if you quote it. Abbreviate the name of biblical book cited, using the standard abbreviation used in your research sources. Indicate the translation following the reference: e.g. (Gal 1:1, NIV).
