Enclosed are the two post that need to be responded to separately.Post 1 KIWhat can you do to prepare for your first meeting with clients from a different culture than yours?While cultural awareness is a thought and standard in the practice of social work, it is not as easy to accomplish when there are other contributing barriers such as language, values, beliefs etc. There are basic considerations for practicing competently with clients of different cultural backgrounds that include having personal self-awareness as a practitioner and understanding personal values, biases, power and position, as well as, developing an ability to grasp the clients worldview, and having an ability to identify/use interventions that fit the cultural criteria in meeting the needs of the client (Jani, & Okundaye, 2014).  To prepare for a first meeting with the consideration of cultural differences stemming from beliefs and value systems, language barriers, or even positions of power, I think it is always a great idea to screen the client whether by phone inquiry or self-reporting questionnaire that allows the client to introduce themselves informally and gives the practitioner an opportunity to identify some cultural differences in which the practitioner can then prepare to acknowledge, consider, and be sensitive to certain differences. Also if there is a language barrier, like in my current job, we have access to language lines for professional translators and which would be used if necessary. What can you do in the initial session with these clients from a different culture than yours to enhance your relationship with them?Personally, to build rapport and to break the ice, because engagement and assessment, as Kirst-Ashman and Hull (2015) mention are the first two steps of planned changed, and we learned that clients are the experts of their lives, the initial session could be an opportunity for sharing on both sides (practitioner and client). While not going in grave detail of the culturagram (because it could be too personal for the first session), the practitioner can introduce some of the questions I more simpler terms like learning about where the client is from, how long has it been since the client left and then focus on fond memories of living back home. The practitioner can then also share some personal differences and that way this is a learning opportunity and rapport building opportunity. The culturagram, similar to the genogram and ecomap  is a tool for learning the role of culture in the clients life, the environmental factors, client systems, and whatever else that will enhance the practitioners knowledge and understanding of the client and their similarities and differences. In social work practice, the culture varies so much to where we may feel like many of the clients that we are working with are out of our realm. When trying to understand the diverse families that we work with, it is always important to assess the family within its cultural context (Congress & Kung, 2013). Often the assessment process would be for me to begin to read family background and history to gain more insight and understanding as to whom I am working with. Reading family history can be very beneficial in understanding past trauma, mental health substance abuse, culture, family structure, etc. Social workers should have knowledge of cultural competence when working with clients. Per the NASW Code of Ethics (2018), “it states that social workers should have the knowledge base of their client’s cultures and be able to demonstrate cultural competence, this is to include the type of services that the social worker will provide.”What can you do in the initial session with these clients from a different culture than yours to enhance your relationship with them?            My initial meeting with the client I would take what I learned from reading the background or family history and try to relate to the clients based on their cultural differences. I would utilize the culturagram to try to understand the socio-cultural context of the client and the client’s family. The culturagram covers a multitude amount of arenas regarding the client and client history such as legal status, language spoken at home/community, health beliefs, and access, trauma/crisis events, cultural contact, discrimination, values about education/work, and values about family structure (Congress & Kung, 2013).
