Hewlett-Packard (HP) is one of the largest computer manufacturing companies in the
world. Before 2002, Compaq was one of HP’s largest competitor in the market regarding product
quality and pricing. This, however, changed in 2002 when HP acquired Compaq in a merger
process which elevated HP to a key market player in the computing industry. The move,
however, came with several human resource challenges to HP during the integration process.
Getting to understand these challenges is important in understanding how best they were
resolved by the organization.
One of the human resource problem faced by the organization following integration was
on how to motivate the new workforce which joined the company from HP. With the merger
bringing in new employees from Compaq, HP human resource managers had a challenge coming
up with a new motivation strategy that would cater for the two workforces coming from
